Leader Of The Band
David Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

An only child alone and wild, a cabinet maker's son
His hands were meant for different work
And his heart was known to none
He left his home and went his lone and solitary way
And he gave to me a gift I know I never can repay

A quiet man of music denied a simpler fate
He tried to be a soldier once, but his music wouldn't wait
He earned his love through discipline, a thundering velvet hand
His gentle means of sculpting souls took me years to understand

The leader of the band is tired and his eyes are growing old
But his blood runs through my instrument and his song is in my soul
My life has been a poor attempt to imitate the man
I'm just a living legacy to the leader of the band

My brother's lives were different for they heard another call
One went to Chicago and the other to St Paul
And I'm in Colorado when I'm not in some hotel
Living out this life I've chose and come to know so well

I thank you for the music and your stories of the road
I thank you for the freedom when it came my time to go
I thank you for the kindness and the times when you got tough
And papa, I don't think I said I love you near enough

The leader of the band is tired and his eyes are growing old
But his blood runs through my instrument and his song is in my soul
My life has been a poor attempt to imitate the man

I'm just a living legacy to the leader of the band
I am a living legacy to the leader of the band

Overall Meaning

In David "Kawika" Kahiapo's song "Leader Of The Band," he talks about his father who was an only child and a cabinet maker's son with a talent for music. However, his father's heart was known to none, and he left his home to go his own way. He gave David a gift that he knows he can never repay. His father tried to be a soldier once, but his music wouldn't wait. Instead, he became a quiet man of music, who earned his love through discipline.

David's father was a gentle means of sculpting souls, and it took David years to understand him. The leader of the band is now getting older, but his blood runs through David's instrument, and his song is in his soul. David feels that his life has been a poor attempt to imitate the man, but he is a living legacy to the leader of the band. David thanks his father for the music, the stories of the road, and the freedom he gave him. @Karen Harrison -Benson Thank you Karen. I was lucky. I’ve had him 51 years. A lot of people never get a Dad that long. Muchless a really good man like I did. I have no room to complain. But I love this song. Blessings to you!

I understand your pain so well... may you find a bit of peace and joy in the memories as time goes by... I just lost my father last month . He was so much to so many...i hope he knew how much he was loved. He's with my mother, my brother, my nephew, his parents and all of his siblings now. He was 84❤

@Kristen Ronyak my Dad was 82. Same generation. I am so sorry for your loss! Blessings to you and your family. Loss of parents teaches us many things. The biggest is that our children are all we really leave behind. Your Dad was proud of you...I’m certain of it.

I lost my father in 1995 and it took 5 years before I could listen to this song again. When I did I never stopped listening.

Luckily me and my father said "I love you" to each other all the time, however,it still DOES feel like I never said I loved him enough.

Miss you pops.
