Someone to Watch Over Me
David Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

There's a saying old says that love is blind
Still were often told, seek and ye shall find
So I'm going to seek a certain lad I've had in mind
Looking everywhere, haven't found him yet

Hes the big affair I cannot forget
Only man I ever think of with regret
I'd like to add his initial to my monogram
Tell me, where is the shepherd for this lost lamb?

There's a somebody I'm longing to see
I hope that he turns out to be
Someone who'll watch over me
I'm a little lamb who's lost in the wood
I know I could always be good
Someone who'll watch over me

Although he may not be the man some
Girls think of as handsome
To my heart he carries the key
Won't you tell him please to put on some speed

Follow my lead, oh, how I need
Someone to watch over me

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to David Paul Mesler's song Someone To Watch Over Me speak to the universal desire for companionship and someone to care for us. The song opens with the saying that love is blind, emphasizing that despite any flaws or imperfections, love is worth seeking out. The singer then expresses their own longing for a certain someone, the "big affair" they cannot forget. They yearn for this person to notice them and become their protector, asking where their "shepherd" is.

The chorus expresses the singer's hope that this person they are searching for will become the "someone who'll watch over me." They feel lost like a little lamb in the woods and long for someone who will care for them. The singer acknowledges that this person may not be conventionally attractive or wealthy, but to their heart, they hold the key. The last line of the chorus makes a plea for this person to hurry and follow the singer's lead, as they are in desperate need of someone to watch over them.

Overall, the lyrics of Someone To Watch Over Me evoke a sense of vulnerability and longing, as the singer searches for someone to fill a void in their life. The song is a classic love ballad that has been covered by many artists and is a testament to the enduring appeal of the desire for love and protection.

The music can’t be understood unless you have lived it, as Charlie Parker once alluded.

It doesn’t surprise me, those who have lived the jazz culture are not behind the air waves, or producing the music today, just too young to have lived it, and unless they have come from the family of a big band and/or a Be bop family member and not inquired by the inward man, chance are the marker points toward following generation wet behind the ears and/or the great material compromise.

Therefore, we have a music culture which have flopped off the shoulders of American Jazz Classic upon the steering wheel of the new age music industry prompting.
