Always there staring with eyes from the sixties black and white
Every day and every night a tenner for your thoughts
The smile and the handshake won't redeem this ocean of time between us
My heart takes an extra beat just from the thought that we will never meet
My heart takes an extra beat
But I close my eyes and get back in line I close my eyes and get back behind you all
Cause today is a day to feel small
Tomorrow like 4th of July
I'll be the fire and you'll be the light imagine their surprise
So cut off another lock of your hair to return to yourself
Stop walking in circles cause there's nothing there
Cut off a lock of your hair
And close your eyes and get back in line close your eyes and get back behind them all
Cause today is a day to feel small
In "4th of July" by David & The Citizens, the lyrics describe a nostalgic feeling of the past and a sense of longing for connection with somebody. The song starts off with the line "Tenner for your thoughts what is this you've got on your mind" which implies that the singer is curious to know what somebody else is thinking about. The next line "Always there staring with eyes from the sixties black and white" suggests that the person the singer is referring to could be someone that he has never met or someone from his past whom he has not seen in a long time. The line "My heart takes an extra beat just from the thought that we will never meet" reinforces the idea of longing and wanting to connect with somebody who may be from a past time or someone he may never meet.
As the song continues, the singer talks about "getting back in line" and "feeling small" which suggests that he may be feeling lost or insignificant in life. The line "No time for thinking tomorrow like 4th of July" can be interpreted as a message to live in the moment and not worry about the future. The lyrics "I'll be the fire and you'll be the light" gives hope that the singer will find someone to connect with and overcome his feelings of insignificance. The song ends with the line "Stop walking in circles cause there's nothing there" which can be interpreted as a call to action to stop going in circles in life and start making meaningful connections with others.
