In Revelation Chapter 16 we see that armies assemble at Armageddon before they destroy the βgreat cityβ (Rev. 16:16,19) Now, Armageddon is just a few miles away from Jerusalem. If Babylon is Rome or New York City, why would the armies be gathering near Jerusalem? This is strong evidence that the βgreat cityβ called βBabylonβ in chapter 16 is actually Jerusalem.

Revelation 17:4 describes the attire of the harlot woman/city. She βwas arrayed in scarlet and purple and adorned with gold and jewels and pearls, holding in her hand a golden cup.β This is very similar to the Jewish priestsβ attire as described at length in Exodus 28.

In Revelation, Babylon is a city, but it is also portrayed as an adulterous womanβ¦ a harlot. It is called βthe mother of prostitutes and of earthβs abominations.β (Rev. 17:5) Ancient Babylon was a wicked place, but by the time that John wrote Revelation, it was an inconsequential town. It certainly was no longer a βgreat cityβ. So we need to consider this question: Was there any other first century βgreat cityβ that could be accused of spiritual adultery? Anyone familiar with the Old Testament knows the answer to that questionβ¦ over and over again God accused Jerusalem of whoredom. βSee how the faithful city (Jerusalem) has become a harlotβ¦β (Isa. 1:21) β β¦you have played the harlot, forsaking your God. You have loved the harlotβs wages on every threshing floor.β (Hosea 9:1) Revelation describes how God would soon pour out his wrath on the harlot-city that He symbolically calls βBabylonβ. Jerusalem was that harlot-city.
