Under Pressure
David Bowie爀 Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Mm ba ba de
Um bum ba de
Um bu bu bum da de
Pressure pushing down on me
Pressing down on you no man ask for
Under pressure that brings a building down
Splits a family in two
Puts people on streets
Um ba ba be
Um ba ba be
De day da
Ee day da, that's okay
It's the terror of knowing
What the world is about
Watching some good friends
Screaming 'Let me out'
Pray tomorrow gets me higher
Pressure on people people on streets
Day day de mm hm
Da da da ba ba
Okay
Chippin' around - kick my brains around the floor
These are the days it never rains but it pours
Ee do ba be
Ee da ba ba ba
Um bo bo
Be lap
People on streets - ee da de da de
People on streets - ee da de da de da de da
It's the terror of knowing
What this world is about
Watching some good friends
Screaming 'Let me out'
Pray tomorrow - gets me higher higher high
Pressure on people people on streets
Turned away from it all like a blind man
Sat on a fence but it don't work
Keep coming up with love but it's so slashed and torn
Why why why?
Love love love love love
Insanity laughs under pressure we're breaking
Can't we give ourselves one more chance
Why can't we give love that one more chance
Why can't we give love give love give love give love
Give love give love give love give love give love
'Cause love's such an old fashioned word
And love dares you to care for
The people on the (People on streets) edge of the night
And loves (People on streets) dares you to change our way of
Caring about ourselves
This is our last dance
This is ourselves
Under pressure

Overall Meaning

David Bowie's song "Under Pressure" is a powerful commentary on the pressures of life that can cause tension and break apart relationships. The lyrics begin with a repetition of nonsensical words, which emphasizes the sense of confusion and disorientation that can arise from the pressure of the outside world. The next few lines describe the way that pressure affects individuals and society at large, referencing families breaking apart and people ending up on the streets. The bridge of the song shifts into a more introspective tone as Bowie sings about the terror of knowing the reality of the world and watching friends struggle to cope with it. The chorus repeats the main theme of the song, with increasing urgency and intensity, as Bowie reflects on the devastating impact of pressure on both individuals and society.

The song's verses jump between disjointed images of confusion, frustration, and despair to create a chilling portrait of the impact of external pressures on people's lives. Bowie's lyrics delve deeply into the psychological impact of social forces, showcasing the way these pressures can cause people to turn away from life or reject its values altogether. Meanwhile, the chorus repeats a refrain about the power of love and its ability to change our ways of caring for ourselves and others. The instrumental break adds an extra layer of emotional depth to the song, with wailing saxophones and a pounding drum beat that intensify the feeling of being under pressure.

"Letter To Hermione"

The hand that wrote this letter
Sweeps the pillow clean
So rest your head and
read a treasured dream
I care for no one else but you
I tear my soul to cease the pain
I think maybe you feel the same
What can we do?
I'm not quite sure what we're supposed to do
So I've been writing just for you

They say your life is going very well
They say you sparkle like a different girl
But something tells me that you hide
When all the world is warm and tired
You cry a little in the dark
Well so do I
I'm not quite sure
what you're supposed to say
But I can see it's not okay

He makes you laugh
He brings you out in style
He treats you well
And makes you up real fine
And when he's strong
He's strong for you
And when you kiss
It's something new
But did you ever call my name
Just by mistake?
I'm not quite sure what I'm supposed to do
So I'll just write some love to you

LETTER TO DAVID

The hand that wrote this letter sweeps my tears away
So rest your head and read my love today
I cared for no one else like you, I tear my soul to cease the pain
I'll never see you again
What can we do?

I'm not quite sure what we're supposed to do
So I've been writing just to you

They said your life was going very well
They said you came from a different star
But something tells me that you'd hide
When all the world was warm and tired
You cried a little in the dark
Well now do I

I'm not quite sure what I'm supposed to say
But I can see it'll be okay

You made us laugh, he brought us out in style
You treated us well and made youself up real fine
And when you were strong, we were there for you
And all your songs were something new
But did you ever use your name just by mistake?

I'm not quite sure what I'm supposed to do
So I'll just write some love to you

Mac N' Cheese

This is Bowie's most underrated song in my opinion. It's just enchanting yet so simple.

Oompa Loompa doompa-de-doo

It’s not simple at all Macaroni and cheese man

Mac N' Cheese

@Oompa Loompa doompa-de-doo that's macaroni and cheese woman to you, pal

@Oompa Loompa doompa-de-doo Simple doesn’t mean simplistic. I’m pretty sure MN’C meant it in terms of how heartfelt and pure the emotion comes across. How the sentiment is so readily identifiable is what makes it “simple”.

Francelino

I love this man , even his not so famous works are better than everyone elses , I won't try to put it in words how delicate this song is

lucas francelino I love Bowies famous songs but I agree his lesser known work is what makes me love him. He was a poet.

David was ahead of every direction music took. I followed him from 'Space Oddity' thru 'Young American' (Ziggy was my favorite) then lost interest with the 'electronica phase', but found a new Bowie in 'China Girl' etc and on through his later years. His contributions to music - all around - are unrecognized by many.
