Bowie developed an interest in music from an early age. He studied art, music and design before embarking on a professional career as a musician in 1963. "Space Oddity", released in 1969, was his first top-five entry on the UK Singles Chart. After a period of experimentation, he re-emerged in 1972 during the glam rock era with his flamboyant and androgynous alter ego Ziggy Stardust. The character was spearheaded by the success of Bowie's single "Starman" and album The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars, which won him widespread popularity. In 1975, Bowie's style shifted towards a sound he characterised as "plastic soul", initially alienating many of his UK fans but garnering him his first major US crossover success with the number-one single "Fame" and the album Young Americans. In 1976, Bowie starred in the cult film The Man Who Fell to Earth and released Station to Station. In 1977, he again changed direction with the electronic-inflected album Low, the first of three collaborations with Brian Eno that came to be known as the "Berlin Trilogy". "Heroes" (1977) and Lodger (1979) followed; each album reached the UK top five and received lasting critical praise.
After uneven commercial success in the late 1970s, Bowie had three number-one hits: the 1980 single "Ashes to Ashes", its album Scary Monsters (and Super Creeps), and "Under Pressure" (a 1981 collaboration with Queen). He achieved massive commercial success in the 1980s starting with Let's Dance (1983). Between 1988 and 1992, he fronted the hard rock band Tin Machine before resuming his solo career in 1993. Throughout the 1990s and 2000s, Bowie continued to experiment with musical styles, including industrial and jungle. He also continued acting; his roles included Major Jack Celliers in Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence (1983), Jareth the Goblin King in Labyrinth (1986), Pontius Pilate in The Last Temptation of Christ (1988), and Nikola Tesla in The Prestige (2006), among other film and television appearances and cameos. He stopped touring after 2004 and his last live performance was at a charity event in 2006. In 2013, Bowie returned from a decade-long recording hiatus with The Next Day. He remained musically active until his death from liver cancer at his home in New York City. He died two days after both his 69th birthday and the release of his final album, Blackstar (2016).
During his lifetime, his record sales, estimated at over 100 million records worldwide, made him one of the best-selling musicians of all time. In the UK, he was awarded ten platinum, eleven gold and eight silver album certifications, and released 11 number-one albums. In the US, he received five platinum and nine gold certifications. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1996. Rolling Stone ranked him among the greatest artists in history. As of 2022, Bowie was the best-selling vinyl artist of the 21st century.

Rudi stayed at home to starve
I could make it all worthwhile
As a rock and roll star
Bevan tried to change the nation
Sonny wants to turn the world, well he can tell you that he tried
I could make a transformation as a rock and roll star
I could play the wild mutation
As a rock and roll star
Get it on yeah
(Ooh yeah)
I could do with the money (you know that I)
I'm so wiped out with things as they are (you know that I)
I'd send my photograph to my honey
And I'd come on like a regular superstar
I could make a transformation
As a rock and roll star
So inviting, so enticing to play the part
I could play the wild mutation
As a rock and roll star, get it on yeah
I could do with the money (you know that I)
I'm so wiped out with things as they are (you know that I)
I'd send my photograph to my honey
And I'd come on like a regular superstar
I could fall asleep at night
As a rock and roll star
I could fall in love all right
As a rock and roll star
Rock and roll star
Rock and roll star
Just watch me now
The lyrics of David Bowie's "The Stars" paint a picture of young aspiring musicians who are facing difficult times but have a dream of making it big as rock and roll stars. The song is a commentary on the state of the times in the 1960s and 70s when there was civil unrest and social upheaval. The first two lines of the song mention Tony and Rudi, with Tony fighting in Belfast and Rudi staying at home to starve. These lines reflect the struggles of the times, with young men fighting in wars and others struggling just to make ends meet.
The next lines talk about the ambitions of the young musicians, as they dream of making it big in the music industry. The singer talks about how he could "make it all worthwhile" as a rock and roll star and "make a transformation" through his music. The lines "So inviting, so enticing to play the part, I could play the wild mutation" suggest that the singer is willing to take on any persona necessary to become successful.
The chorus of the song emphasizes the desire for fame and fortune, with the singer proclaiming that he "could do with the money" and is "so wiped out with things as they are". He dreams of sending his photograph to his loved ones and coming across as a "regular superstar". The song concludes with the singer dreaming of falling asleep at night and falling in love as a rock and roll star.
Overall, "The Stars" is a powerful reflection of the time period in which it was written, with its commentary on social and political issues and its message of hope and dreams of success.

Stars are never sleeping
Dead ones and the living
[Verse 1]
We live closer to the earth
Never to the heavens
The stars are never far away
The stars are out tonight
They watch us from behind their shades
Brigitte Jack and Kate and Brad
From behind their tinted window stretch
Gleaming like blackened sunshine
[Chorus]
Stars are never sleeping
Dead ones and the living
[Verse 2]
Waiting for the first move
Satyrs and their child wives
Waiting for the last move
Soaking up our primitive world
[Chorus]
Stars are never sleeping
Dead ones and the living
[Verse 3]
Their jealousy's spilling down
The stars must stick together
We will never be rid of these stars
But I hope they live forever
[Bridge]
And they know just we do
That we toss and turn at night
They're waiting to make their moves
But the stars are out tonight
[Verse 4]
Here they are upon the stairs
Sexless and unaroused
They are stars, they're dying for you
But I hope they live forever
They burn you with their radiant smiles
Trap you with their beautiful eyes
They're broke and shamed or drunk or scared
But I hope they live forever
Their jealousy's spilling down
The stars must stick together
We will never be rid of these stars
But I hope they live forever
[Outro]
And they know just what we do
That we toss and turn at night
They're waiting to make their moves on us
But the stars are out tonight
The stars are out tonight
The stars are out tonight

As estrelas (aparecem hoje À noite)
As estrelas nunca dormem
As mortas e as vivas
Vivemos mais perto da terra
Nunca dos paraísos
As estrelas nunca estão longe
As estrelas aparecem hoje à noite
Eles nos vêem por detrás de seus óculos escuros
Jack e kate e brad
Por detrás de suas janelas fumês
Brilhando como luz solar enegrecida
As estrelas nunca dormem
As mortas e as vivas
Esperando pelo primeiro lance
Canalhas e suas esposas crianças
Esperando o último lance
Se impregnando de nosso mundo primitivo
As estrelas nunca dormem
As mortas e as vivas
O ressentimento delas está transbordando
As estrelas devem ficar juntas
As estrelas devem ficar juntas
As estrelas aparecem hoje à noite
As estrelas aparecem hoje à noite

One of the greatest music videos ever made
@raynehell1217
And a great song
@swisschoklate736
What makes it great? Tell me! This poor guy was tryna tell us what truly goes on behind the closed doors to stars!!! And he was eventually murdered!!
@raynehell1217
@Swiss Choklate He's suggesting that stars are alien-like, narcissistic psychopaths who's careeers depend on them mimicking us norms while adding some 'star' magic to beguile us. They're 'soaking up our primitive lives'.
In the video the stars are prying into what goes on behind our closed doors, in order to copy/mock us.
But while we should know better than to be seduced by these stars fake glitter, we can't help ourselves. We secretly (or otherwise) wish for more exciting lives, and these stars provide us with at least a temporary escape while we're with them (on record, on TV, in cinema, on stage)

I've always thought both Tilda Swinton and David Bowie had the same type of otherworldliness---that ethereal, androgynous beauty. It's so wonderful to see them together; it just fits somehow. Glad to see this.
@andyserfes4884
if there is ever going to be a david bowie biopic, the only person that could ever play him is tilda swinton

I checked your profile after reading another of your comments, and you seem to be at around the same level of knowledge & understanding as myself. So, I was curious if you had any recommended channels where I could possibly learn something new?
