The Stars
David Bowie (The Next Day / 2013) Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Stars are never sleeping
Dead ones and the living

We live closer to the earth
Never to the heavens
The stars are never far away
Stars are out tonight
They watch us from behind their shades
Brigitte, Jack and Kate and Brad
From behind their tinted window stretch
Gleaming like blackened sunshine

Stars are never sleeping
Dead ones and the living

Waiting for the first move
Satyrs and their child wives
Waiting for the last move
Soaking up our primitive world

Stars are never sleeping
Dead ones and the living

Their jealousy's spilling down
The stars must stick together
We will never be rid of these stars
But I hope they live forever

And they know just what we do
That we toss and turn at night
They're waiting to make their moves
For the stars are out tonight

Here they are upon the stairs
Sexless and unaroused
They are the stars, they're dying for you
But I hope they live forever

They burn you with their radiant smiles
Trap you with their beautiful eyes
They're broke and shamed or drunk or scared
But I hope they live forever

Their jealousy's spilling down
The stars must stick together
We will never be rid of these stars
But I hope they live forever

And they know just what we do
That we toss and turn at night
They're waiting to make their moves on us
But the stars are out tonight

The stars are out tonight
The stars are out tonight

Overall Meaning

David Bowie's song "Tonight" contains a deep exploration of the relationship between human beings and the stars. It starts on a philosophical note, with Bowie observing that the stars are never sleeping. Even those who are dead among them are still watching us from above. The second stanza brings a comparison between human beings and the heavens above. We live nearer to the earth even though the stars are not far away. Despite the vast distance between us and the stars, it is interesting that he uses the same verb for both human beings and the stars, implying that we are more alike than we might think.

The notion of "waiting" runs throughout the song, with Bowie mentioning that the satyrs and their child wives as well as the stars, are waiting for the first and the last move, respectively. The lyrics also contain an air of mystery and a sense of conspiratorial action, with the stars watching us from behind their shaded windows. Bowie mentions famous names like Brigitte, Jack, Kate, and Brad, and from behind their tinted windows, they appear to stretch and gleam like blackened sunshine. The song proceeds to outline the beauty, mystery, and danger of the stars, portraying them as sexless, unaroused and dying for us, but at the same time, they can break us with their radiant energy.

As estrelas (aparecem hoje À noite)

As estrelas nunca dormem
As mortas e as vivas
Vivemos mais perto da terra
Nunca dos paraísos
As estrelas nunca estão longe
As estrelas aparecem hoje à noite
Eles nos vêem por detrás de seus óculos escuros
Jack e kate e brad
Por detrás de suas janelas fumês
Brilhando como luz solar enegrecida
As estrelas nunca dormem
As mortas e as vivas
Esperando pelo primeiro lance
Canalhas e suas esposas crianças
Esperando o último lance
Se impregnando de nosso mundo primitivo
As estrelas nunca dormem
As mortas e as vivas
O ressentimento delas está transbordando
As estrelas devem ficar juntas
As estrelas devem ficar juntas
As estrelas aparecem hoje à noite
As estrelas aparecem hoje à noite

One of the greatest music videos ever made

@raynehell1217

And a great song

@swisschoklate736

What makes it great? Tell me! This poor guy was tryna tell us what truly goes on behind the closed doors to stars!!! And he was eventually murdered!!

@raynehell1217

@Swiss Choklate He's suggesting that stars are alien-like, narcissistic psychopaths who's careeers depend on them mimicking us norms while adding some 'star' magic to beguile us. They're 'soaking up our primitive lives'.
In the video the stars are prying into what goes on behind our closed doors, in order to copy/mock us.
But while we should know better than to be seduced by these stars fake glitter, we can't help ourselves. We secretly (or otherwise) wish for more exciting lives, and these stars provide us with at least a temporary escape while we're with them (on record, on TV, in cinema, on stage)

@schnook11

I've always thought both Tilda Swinton and David Bowie had the same type of otherworldliness---that ethereal, androgynous beauty. It's so wonderful to see them together; it just fits somehow. Glad to see this.

@andyserfes4884

if there is ever going to be a david bowie biopic, the only person that could ever play him is tilda swinton

@afinn5555

There is a uranian comparison an Aquarian torch they both share.

@withnail-and-i

They both descend from only three families that can trace lineage back to before the conquest of Great Britain

I checked your profile after reading another of your comments, and you seem to be at around the same level of knowledge & understanding as myself. So, I was curious if you had any recommended channels where I could possibly learn something new?
