Music of the Night
David Cook Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Night time sharpens, heightens each sensation
Darkness stirs and wakes imagination
Silently the senses abandon their defences...

Softly, gently, night unfurls it's splendour
Grasp it, sense it, tremulous and tender

Turn your face away from the garish light of day,
Turn your thoughts away from cold, unfeeling light
And listen to the music of the night

Let your mind start a journey through a strange new world!
Leave all thoughts of the world you knew before!
Let your soul take you where you long to be!
Only then can you belong to me...

Floating, falling, sweet intoxication!
Touch me, trust me, savour each sensation!
Let the dream begin, let your darker side give in
To the power of the music that I write
The power of the music of the night...

Of the night...

You alone can make my song take flight
help me make the music of the night...

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of David Cook's song 'The Music of the Night' conveys a sense of escapism from the harsh reality of the outside world, as the night seizes the senses and the imagination runs free. The dark and quiet night allows us to be more vulnerable, making it easier to feel the tender and delicate aspects of life. The line 'turn your face away from the garish light of day' implies that the day is noisy and chaotic, urging us to escape to the quietness of the night. The song takes the form of a seduction, with the singer inviting the listener to join him in a dream world where the music of the night can take hold.

The lyrics suggest that the seducer is a composer who derives his power from the music he writes. The music of the night is the singer's masterpiece, which can transport the listener to another world. The line 'you alone can make my song take flight' highlights the fact that the listener is an integral part of the composer's creation. To truly experience the power of the music of the night, the listener must give in to their darker side.

barrie miller

this stands out as one of the greatest performances in american idol history!
As a singer myself the last note soar was simply a goosebump experience
of incredible power!

L Bryan

I was puzzled when they did the official recording without the final note. That note should have been released to the world!

Carrie

Exactly. I could and have listened to this song over and over again! The last note especially.

Beverly Wheeler

He's a rocker singing opera. He did dang good. Love his voice.

Kensi Blonde

@chaconazo7 It's not. He does the quiet hold in the studio version, but he knew this would play better on a live pop show. Jeez.

Brian Hagaman

@Zubair Hossain well he sang it good that's the important thing I Iove musical Theaters especially The Phantom Of The Opera which is so happens I Saw it on Broadway it will was so beautiful Andrew Lloyd Webber is a great Composer

Zubair Hossain

Easy there, Phantom of the Opera is a musical, not an opera. Opera is significantly more difficult and also, sort of the charm is in the fact that there are no mics in opera, but this was a pretty good performance nonetheless

chaconazo7

Beverly Wheeler he still didn't need to yell out the highest pitch. Well I guess that's the only way he knew how to do it
