Full Steam
David Gray Feat. Annie Lennox Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

All our lives we've dreamed about it
Just to find that it was never real
This sure ain't no great Valhalla
Coming closer each turn of the wheel
Forlorn adrift on seas of beige
In this our Golden Age
Bullied suckered pimped and patronized
Every day your tawdry little lives
So loose your head
And step within
The silence deafening
Now you saw it coming
And I saw it coming
We all saw it coming
But we still bought it
Now you saw it coming
And I saw it coming but still
Running full steam ahead
In and out of consciousness
It breaks my heart to see you like this
Crying wringing hands and cursing fate
Always so little far too late
It's 3am I'm wide awake
There's still one call to make
Now you saw it coming
And I saw it coming
We all saw it coming
But we still bought it
Now you saw it coming
And I saw it coming
We all saw it coming
But we still bought it
Running full steam ahead
Running full steam ahead
Running full steam
Now you saw it coming
And I saw it coming and I
Running full steam
Now you
And I
We all saw it coming
But we still bought it

We all saw it coming
But we Still bought it

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of David Gray Feat. Annie Lennox's song Full Steam convey the disappointment and disillusionment that can arise from the pursuit of the "American Dream." The first few lines establish a sense of longing and expectation that is never quite fulfilled. The metaphor of "Valhalla," the Norse mythological afterlife, suggests that the desired outcome is grand and glorious, but the reality falls short. The repetition of the phrase "we all saw it coming, but we still bought it" implies that the result was predictable, but the singer and others like him were fooled into believing in something that was ultimately empty and unfulfilling.

The second stanza shifts focus to the present, describing a sense of apathy and resignation in the face of the disappointment. The description of being "adrift on seas of beige" invokes a sense of being stuck in a mundane and colorless existence. The list of verbs - bullied, suckered, pimped, and patronized - suggests a feeling of being taken advantage of or manipulated. The repetition of the phrase "running full steam ahead" suggests that despite the lack of fulfillment, many people continue to pursue the same goals with the same fervor, without stopping to reconsider whether those goals are worth pursuing.

Overall, the lyrics to Full Steam present a commentary on the disillusionment and emptiness of the pursuit of the American Dream, and suggest that many people continue to pursue that dream despite knowing that it will never truly satisfy them.

I love performers who sing with passion and conviction, and no one does that better than Annie Lennox and David Grey!

Oh ANNIE. I am freaking balling to this song I think I have played it 6 times already and I have shared it with like 6 people on facebook. Its got me shaking like a leaf or a rattled bone. Wondering about peple who are going hungry and war all over. You got me wide awake. Yesterday I was having a rough day and I was thinking, there has to be some light to all my fighting against darkness. And I woke up to the gift of this. Thank you soooo much. sooo much!

I've been a David Gray fan since I first heard his track "Babylon" over 10 years ago. I adore Annie Lennox.

@bugpal

Hey there music, hope you’re doing well after two years. I absolutely fell in love with David’s “White Ladder” album. I had no idea he had done a duet with Annie L until this randomly came on My ol’ iPod and I recognized her voice.
