Baby Blue
David Hugo Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
No, I don't have friends
I don't wanna go, I don't wanna go
Can I hold your hand? (Please?)
Sitting in the garden
Didn't wanna go
So I threw a tantrum to let my momma know
I don't wanna go
No, I don't wanna
I don't wanna go
To kindergarten (please)
Crying as I walked in
You were crying too
Teacher said that I was sensitive
Called me baby blue
I don't wanna go
I don't wanna leave you here alone
Didn't wanna go, didn't wanna go then I made a friend
Didn't wanna go, didn't wanna go then you held my hand
Baby, baby Blue
It's me and you baby, baby Blue
Saw you fall while playing kickball
It's not for you, it's not for me
Frightened when they turned the lights off
But you kept me company
Didn't wanna go, didn't wanna go then I made a friend
Didn't wanna go, didn't wanna go then you held my hand
Baby, baby Blue
It's me and you baby, baby Blue
Didn't wanna go, didn't wanna go then I made a friend
Didn't wanna go, didn't wanna go then you held my hand
Baby, baby Blue
It's me and you baby, baby Blue
The lyrics of David Hugo's song "Baby Blue" tell a story of a child who is reluctant to go to kindergarten and seeks comfort and friendship from another child named Baby Blue. The song starts with the repeated line "I don't wanna go" which represents the child's resistance and reluctance to leave his current comfort, possibly at home. The line "No, I don't have friends" suggests that the child feels lonely and may be anxious about starting in a new environment without any familiar faces.
As the song progresses, the child expresses their desire to hold someone's hand, possibly to find solace and reassurance in the presence of another person. The line "Sitting in the garden, didn't wanna go" indicates that the child resorted to throwing a tantrum to make it clear to their mother that they didn't want to leave their current setting. It shows their desperate attempt to avoid going to kindergarten.
Upon entering kindergarten, the child finds empathy in their teacher, who recognizes their sensitivity and refers to them as "baby blue." This term represents the child's vulnerability and emotional state in this new environment. The chorus repeats the statement "I don't wanna go, I don't wanna leave you here alone," emphasizing the child's unwillingness to separate from their newfound friend.
As the song continues, the child recalls moments where they felt supported and comforted by Baby Blue. The lines "Saw you fall while playing kickball, it's not for you, it's not for me" suggests that the two children faced challenges together and formed a mutual understanding. The child also mentions being frightened when the lights were turned off, but Baby Blue's presence offers them consolation and company.
Overall, "Baby Blue" conveys the vulnerability and apprehension of a child transitioning into a new environment. It highlights the importance of friendship and finding solace in others during uncertain times.

This song brought back a memory from kindergarten. I was not popular but also didn't have much close friends, and one day this one boy came to me and asked me to play with him. Since then we made up a world in our heads where he was the prince and I was the princess, and we always would close our eyes and sit next to each other. we would go on adventures together and fight monsters while holding hands. One day his family and him left the country and said it would only be for a year. Every day I waited for him and tried to keep our world safe until I just gave up. Then in 6th grade he came back, but he was a completely different person and I bet he didn't even remember me..
