By the Waters
David Meece Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Close my eyes
And lead me by the waters
That flow beneath the Savior's feet
And bathe my restless soul in silence
And bind this darkness with Your peace
And bind this darkness with Your peace

For I'm tired
And weakened from the battles
That scar the deepest part of me
And my heart is overwhelmed in sorrows
That none but You could ever see
That none but You could ever see

CHORUS:

Close my eyes and let my spirit wander
Through the vastness of your mystery
Let me feel the fullness of Your glory
Rising from the heart of me

'Till the day
I pass across the waters
And soothe my brow beneath Your hand
May I find in You my strength and comfort

For by Your grace alone I stand
For by Your grace alone I stand

Overall Meaning

The song "By the Waters" by David Meece is a beautiful prayer that reflects on the deep need for spiritual solace in the face of struggles and hardship. The opening lines of the song express the desire to find peace and stillness, asking to be led by the waters that flow beneath the Savior's feet. This metaphor suggests both a physical and spiritual journey, as the singer seeks to find rest and cleansing in the presence of God. The repetition of the phrase "And bind this darkness with Your peace" emphasizes the need for healing and a release from the burdens that weigh heavily on the soul.

The second verse delves deeper into the personal struggles of the singer, describing battles that have left him tired and weakened, and sorrows that only God can see. This vulnerability and honesty about the difficult aspects of faith underscores the importance of seeking comfort and strength from a higher power. The chorus continues the theme of seeking connection with God, asking for the spirit to wander through the mystery of God's vastness and to feel the fullness of His glory rising from within.

The final verse expresses the ultimate hope of finding solace and comfort in God, even in the face of death. The imagery of passing across the waters and finding relief beneath God's hand is a comforting reminder that there is always a source of strength and support to be found, even in the darkest moments of life.

Helga, It is my own experience that tears are given to us to cleanse our hearts and souls, and yes, even our bodies, as we struggle through hardship and experience joy in our daily lives. Jeremiah, the weeping prophet said: "Oh that my head were waters and my eyes a fountain of tears...!" (9:1) I came to Christ in tears that didn't stop for months after I got saved. Even today, when the realisation of what Christ did for us hits me, I cannot sit and think of it without breaking down.

Hello Mark, If these songs are a blessing to even one person, then I praise God for giving me the ability to make these videos. David Meece has a testimony that is powerful indeed, and it is through his own heartache, suffering and deliverance that God gifted him to write songs that encourage others who experience pain and suffering in their lives. May God bless you my brother, and may He cause you to continue to grow in graciousness, gentleness and kindness towards our brethren.

@Aner327 Thank you very much for your kind words. I have always liked these two songs by David Meece. Since coming to live in the USA they took on a whole new meaning to me. "Brokenness" speaks of betrayal, pain, anguish and sheer unadulterated sorrow at the way "friends" have treated me. It is made to one such person in particular. I have no-one to turn to when trials come my way, other than my Lord and Saviour, Christ Jesus. "By the Waters" says much about my life before Christ and now.

Dear Afrikitty, - - These two songs of David Meece, "By the Waters" and "Brokeness" have been a musical centerpiece in my heart for about 12 years. They, better than most any other song I've heard, demonstrate the true beauty of rest and brokenness. I really like what you've done with the pictures. Many of them come together so well with the music to create something even more touching. Keep up the good work. ~ Aner327

*For my friend, ***** *
David Meece can sing songs like this with great understanding of the human condition, because his Dad abused him terribly as a child.
