Harvey
David Pack/Ambrosia Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

All this time
All this worry
All this way to go
For nothin'
What's the sense
Of the hurry?
You tell me
If you sense somethin'
I dreamed a lot when I was younger
I'm older now, and still I hunger
For some understanding
There's no understanding now
Was there ever?
One thin line
Draws the border
Between madness and the genius
But no pen can erase it
So we keep these things between us
I dreamed a lot when I was younger
I'm older now, and still I hunger
For some understanding
There's no understanding, now
Was there ever?

And my front brain would not accept my thinker
See? No kiddin'

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to David Pack/Ambrosia's song "Harvey" explore the themes of time, worry, understanding, and madness. The lines, "All this time, all this worry, all this way to go for nothin'," suggest a sense of futility in life, as though one is going through the motions without any real purpose. The question, "What's the sense of the hurry?" highlights the idea that life can often seem rushed and chaotic, but without any clear direction.

The lyrics then touch upon the concepts of dreaming and hunger. The lines, "I dreamed a lot when I was younger, I'm older now and still I hunger for some understanding," suggest a desire to make sense of life's complexities. The lyrics seem to suggest that understanding may be elusive, however, as the line "There's no understanding now, was there ever?" conveys a sense of defeatism.

Additionally, the lyrics explore the idea of the thin line between madness and genius, and the notion that some things are too complex to be easily explained or erased. The line, "But no pen can erase it, so we keep these things between us," suggests a need to keep certain thoughts or ideas hidden, as they cannot be easily expressed.

I love pretty much everything Ambrosia wrote and performed.
This song is one of my favorites.
But I'm a huge fan of Life Beyond L.A. as well.
David Pack just had that voice back in the day.
But his ballads are great, and the more uptempo rockers are great too.
Plus, David did that soulful ballad rendition of "Maria" from the West Side Story tribute to Leonard Bernstein album, with James Ingram and Michael McDonald.
David put that tribute together.
Sadly I lost my copy of the CD.
Once or twice.
I saw Ambrosia live a few years back, and went backstage to meet David Pack.
Thanked him for all the great songs.
With Ambrosia and without.
He was pretty nice, very low key.
(The band called David "Mr. Blue Eyed Soul" himself.)

Took Ambrosia's first album along on a road trip this month. Just a great record. This live version of Holding on to Yesterday from that album shows that the band's musical chops and especially their vocal blending and skill were not studio trickery but real and repeatable on stage. Truly they were underrated.

Exactly. Real talent with zero interference from technology you see today.

I'd go back to the 70's in a blink of an eye! Unless you lived it, you can't understand it! I know so many bands are great and they do a great job taking us back, but I sure miss those actual days! They were the so full of great rock and the best times ever!! Thanks for taking us back!!
God Bless and stay safe
