Battle Hymn Of The Republic
David Phelps Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord
He is trampling out the vintage where the grapes of wrath are stored.
He hath loosed the fateful lightning of His terrible swift sword
His truth is marching on!

Glory, glory hallelujah!
Glory, glory hallelujah!
Glory, glory hallelujah!
His truth is marching on!
(...)
He has sounded forth the trumpet that shall never call retreat
He is sifting out the hearts of men before His judgement seat.
O be swift, my soul, to answer Him and be jubilant my feet
While God is marching on!

In the beauty of the lilies Christ was born across the sea
With the glory in His bosom that transfigures you and me.
And as He died to make men holy let us live to make men free
While God is marching on!

Oh glory, glory hallelujah!
Glory, glory hallelujah, hallelujah!
Glory hallelujah!
His truth is marching on!
Glory hallelujah

His truth is marching on!
Marching on!

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Battle Hymn Of The Republic" by David Phelps speaks of a divine being, who is seen as the Lord of the impending doom. The lyricist talks about the coming of God and the destruction of sinners by His "terrible swift sword." David Phelps also mentions that the Lord is on a mission to sift out the hearts of men before His judgment seat, and thus warns the people to be swift in their response to God's call. The song speaks of the birth of Christ and uses it as a call to action for people to live a life with the mission to make men holy and free.

The screaming verses of the song give it an epic quality, and it's used more often in military settings. The hymn uses the language of the Bible's Book of Revelation, and it's references to the apocalypse and the second coming. The song speaks of God as a vengeful, righteous judge who brings down the hammer of justice on those who deserve it. However, the chorus speaks of hope and fulfillment, an indication that if one follows the Lord, they will win the battle for eternal life.

David Phelps is the best religious singer I have ever heard. When he sings, one can feel the presence of the Holy Spirit. What an anointed religious singer he is! Praise the Lord.

My HERO - The Lord Jesus the Christ. He has won on the WOODEN CROSS when HE shed HIS BLOOD and He stands VICTORIOUS and by His resurrection I am justified in HIM. We are conquerers with HIM.

We need a Revival in the Land of the Eagles. America we need to go back to God and give back all glory to Him alone because His truth is marching on. Hallelujah
