I Wish It Would Rain
David Ruffin Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Sunshine blue skies please go away
The girl has found another and gone away.
With her went my future my life is filled with gloom
So day after day I stay locked up in my room.
I know to you, it might sound strange but I wish it would rain,

'Cause so badly I wanna go outside
But everyone knows that a man ain't supposed to cry
Listen, I gotta cry 'cause crying eases the pain,
Oh yeah, people this hurt I feel inside.
Words could never explain, I just wish it would rain.

Day in day out my tear-stained face
Pressed against the window pain,
My eyes search the skies desperately for rain,
Cause rain-drops will hide my tear -drops
And no one will ever know that I'm crying,
Crying when I go outside.
To the world outside my tears,
I refuse to explain, oh I wish it would rain,
Let it rain, let it rain.
I need rain to disguise the tears in my eyes.
Oh, let it rain.
I'm a man and I got my pride
Til' it rains I'm gonna stay inside and let it rain.

Overall Meaning

The song "I Wish It Would Rain" by David Ruffin is a poignant plea for rain to help hide the tears of a heartbroken man. He begins by asking for the sunshine and blue skies to go away because the girl he loved has found someone else and left him. His future now seems empty, and he sits in his room day after day, unable to face the world. He admits that his desire for rain might seem strange, but he longs for the ability to go outside again without anyone seeing him cry. He knows that society dictates that men shouldn't cry, but he can't help the pain he feels inside. He wishes words could truly express the depth of his hurt, but they can't, and raindrops are the only thing that will help hide his tears.

The next verse finds him looking out the window day after day, searching for rain. He hopes that raindrops will help cover his tear-drops, leaving no one the wiser that he's been crying. He knows that he can't explain his tears to the world outside, and he longs for the healing power of rain. Only when it rains can he feel comfortable enough to step outside and face the day; otherwise, his pride won't allow him to show his vulnerability to the world. The song ends on a final plea for rain as he acknowledges that until it comes, he will remain hidden away, hoping against hope that his tears will go unnoticed.

Overall, the song speaks to the universal feeling of heartbreak and the desire to hide one's vulnerability from the world. By asking for rain to come, the singer hopes to find solace in the idea of temporary anonymity. This song is a prime example of a classic 1960s Motown ballad that still resonates with audiences today.

The story behind this song is very tragic. It touches my heart, though. The lyrics to this song were written by a talented young Motown lyricist named Rodger Penzabene. He also wrote lyrics for Gladys Knight & the Pips and Marvin Gaye, as well as the Temptations. While working on this album, Rodger found out his wife was cheating on him with another man. Rodger was in a bad place. he couldn't stand the pain, but he couldn't stop loving his wife either. He literally poured his heart, soul, and pain into this song. It was released on December 21, 1967 and went on to become one of The Temptations greatest hits but Rodger never saw that. At 23, Rodger Penzabene took his own life on New Years Eve, 1967. He never got to see that so many people could relate to his pain and heart ache. Rest easy, Rodger, some of us remember you.
