Alone in the Universe
David Usher Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Jamie's on the bathroom floor she don't know why
She's shaking underneath the sink can't feel a thing
She'd love to live a life she's afraid of failure
With all the voices in her head
Now what was that I thought I hear you scream

I know you can feel it
You're already there
Asleep underwater
Just screaming for air
I know you can feel it
You're already
Don't you know we're freaks and creature
Wake up I can almost see the light

I think we're alone here you and I
I think we're alone left wondering why
I think we're alone here you and I
I think we're alone in the universe tonight

Alex on the last train home from god knows where
A million miles away from where he thought he'd be
He's got his suit his tie his drink his MTV
He's trading all his life away
You can't escape we're all infected now

I know you can feel it
You're already there
Asleep underwater
Just screaming for air
I know you can feel it
You're already
Don't you know we're freaks and creatures
Wake up I can almost see the light

I think we're alone here you and I
I think we're alone in the universe tonight

We're all infected now
I know you can feel it
You're already there
Asleep underwater
Just screaming for air
I know you can feel it
You're already
Don't you know we're freaks and creatures
Wake up I can almost see the light

I think we're alone here you and I
I think we're alone left wondering why
I think we're alone here you and I
I think we're alone in the universe tonight

I think we're alone in the universe tonight
I think we're alone in the universe tonight

Overall Meaning

The song "Alone in the Universe" by David Usher is about two different individuals, Jamie and Alex, who feel lost and disconnected from the world around them. Jamie is portrayed as being physically shaken and intimidated, hiding beneath her sink in the bathroom, while dealing with self-doubt and insecurity. Alex, on the other hand, is a successful and accomplished individual who has lost touch with his true self, living a life that seems to lack any real meaning or purpose.

The lyrics paint a picture of two people isolated and alone in a world where they feel like outcasts. The chorus repeats the sentiment that they are alone in the universe, highlighting their sense of loneliness and the feeling that they don't quite belong. The metaphorical use of being "asleep underwater, just screaming for air" reinforces their sense of confusion and desperation in trying to find their way in the world. Usher proclaims that they are "freaks and creatures" and therefore, urges them to wake up and see the light.

The song speaks to the theme of existentialism and the struggle to find one's place in the world. It reminds us that despite appearances, we are all still searching for meaning and connection in our lives.

Jamie's on the bathroom floor
She don't know why
She's shaking underneath the sink
Can't feel a thing

She'd love to live a life
She's too afraid of failure
With all the voices in her head
Now, what was that?
I thought I heard you scream

I know you can feel it, you're already there
Asleep underwater, just screaming for air
I know you can feel it, you're already
Don't you know we're freaks and creatures?
Wake up, I can almost see the light

Alex on the last train home
From God knows where
A million miles away
From where he thought he'd be

He's got his suit, his tie
His drink, his MTV
He's trading all his life away

My girlfriend starred crying when I played this song for her just now. It’s powerful. I wonder if a couple hundred years from now if people would be interested in music from this time. Some people study classical music in this day and age. I know because I had to study eras of music in music college. But what will people think? How will they feel? Will they relate like Shakespeare & Romeo or forget like the biblical meanings culture has lost? It’s anyone’s gambit. This rock rolls around the sun again. It’s anyone’s guess what time may tell in it’s test.

@VanishedPNW

People study classical music because there's no talking. Contemporary pop music relies as much on language as it does in instrumental composition. As soon as you add language you begin to exclude enormous swaths of people. More importantly, however, is that classical music is extraordinarily compelling in structure and composition, far more complex and idiosyncratic in many ways than repetitive, predictable, 4/4, *verse chorus verse chorus" popular music of the middle-late 21st century (and beginning of 22nd).

While I love this song and have for over twenty years, people don't even listen to it now, let alone a hundred or a thousand years from now.
