If I Wanted Someone
Dawes Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Like the memory from your mother's house from before you got too old
Like the feeling from a photograph before it's meanings all got told
The words I say can be silver, but what's left unsaid can be gold
So get to know me once I go away

Maybe 'cause I come from such an empty-hearted town
Or maybe 'cause some love of mine had really let me down
But the only time I am lonely is when others are around
I just never end up knowing what to say

If I wanted someone to clean me up, I'd find myself a maid
If I wanted someone to spend my money, I wouldn't need to get paid
If I wanted someone to understand me, I'd have so much more to say
I want you to make the days move easy

I took everything I thought from what it means to be a man
We need words to be put to what we do not understand
While you lean into the echoes and you do not raise a hand
Oh woman, help me see it like it is

If I wanted someone to clean me up, I'd find myself a maid
If I wanted someone to spend my money, I wouldn't need to get paid
If I wanted someone to understand me, I'd have so much more to say
I want you to make the days move easy

If I wanted someone to clean me up, I'd find myself a maid
If I wanted someone to spend my money, I wouldn't need to get paid
If I wanted someone to cut me down, I'd have handed you the blade

I want you to make the days move easy
I just want you to make the days move easy

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Dawes's song If I Wanted Someone is a reflection of the vulnerability and uncertainty that individuals can face when entering a new relationship. The opening lines compare the feelings of an object or a photograph before it loses its original meaning to a memory from one's childhood home before they aged. The lines demonstrate the desire to hold onto the purity of something before it becomes complex and gets lost in the chaos of life.

The second verse expresses the loneliness that arises even when surrounded by people. The singer reveals that they struggle with finding the right words to say, which poses a major challenge in socializing. The lines "Maybe 'cause I come from such an empty-hearted town/Or maybe 'cause some love of mine had really let me down" highlights the impact of the singer's past and how it affects their present mannerisms.

The chorus is repeated thrice and emphasizes the singer's longing for companionship, but not for monetary or superficial reasons. The mention of a maid and being paid showcases how the singer does not desire surface level relations but wants someone with whom they can connect on a deeper level. The final lines show that the singer wants someone who can make their days easier as they face the uncertainties of life.

Bands like this give me hope for the music of today.

@jon2901

Love the feel of this song. If you knew nothing of this band, it could be mistaken for music of a different era.

@gailgarza8033

Yes.

@jonmelander8912

Because they record in a studio to tape, instead of digitally...there's a depth and heft there that a digital recording just can't get.

@ksol1460tv

@@jonmelander8912 Exactly. Neil Young (who has clearly influenced them) has talked and written at length about the difference and why analog recording is better. This isn't just for audiophiles or people with hyperacuity (which Neil has), it's something that will affect everyone even if they don't consciously recognize what they are hearing (or not hearing, in the case of most digital).

@kevinnobody3052

Almost has an early Neil Young feel to it.

Always appreciate hearing good music on the radio, because it's rare. Great song. Great vibes. Perfect lyrics.

@n3iyr

This is the music I listen to looking out the window on these clear Colorado mornings thinking about old friends (and girls) and places watching wildlife and feelin' chill.
