Born Grace Martine Tandon -- "daya" is the Hindi word for "grace" in a nod to her Indian grandfather -- and raised in the Pittsburgh suburb of Mount Lebanon, she began taking piano lessons at the age of three, and moved on to voice lessons at the age of ten. Songwriting came later, and in 2014 she signed with the Z-Entertainment label based on her demos. A year later, her single "Hide Away" took off thanks to early online support, becoming a hit across the globe and receiving multi-platinum certification. In 2015, Daya issued her debut self-titled EP on Artbeatz. Both "Hide Away" and the follow-up, double-platinum single "Sit Still, Look Pretty" rose to the Top 50 of the Billboard Hot 100, with a number 14 debut on the Heatseekers chart. She later contributed vocals to the Chainsmokers' enduring 2016 smash "Don't Let Me Down" (which went on to win the Grammy for Best Dance Recording). Daya's debut, Sit Still, Look Pretty, was released later that year. The album peaked in the Top 40 in the U.S. and Canada, and was eventually certified gold in the U.S. and silver in the U.K.
In 2017, she appeared on the Gryffin and Illenium track "Feel Good," later releasing her own singles "Safe" and "New," the latter of which became a modest hit in the U.S. and Australia. This marked the start of a multi-year period of standalone single, collaboration, and EP releases. Of the dozen or so fresh tracks that she would release at the turn of the decade, 2019's electronic-dance bop "Insomnia," "Wanted" with NOTD, and "Keeping It in the Dark" from the 13 Reasons Why soundtrack made dents on international charts and streaming services. In 2021, she issued her second EP, The Difference, which included the electro-pop banger "First Time" and the Charlie Puth-assisted hit "Bad Girl." Also that year, she delivered the non-album single, "What If I Told You," and "Evil" from the Blade Runner: Black Lotus anime soundtrack. Another single, the sultry and dance-oriented "Love You When You're Gone," arrived in June 2022 as the first track off her third EP, In Between Dreams. In 2023, Daya revealed that she had become a fully independent artist, gaining control over her sound and image. That year, she began a steady rollout of singles, dropping one every few weeks, starting with June's trip-hop-leaning "Juliene." ~ Neil Z. Yeung

Do you ever think about me and you?
Running to the country where we got nothing to prove
Where we can grow old with new friends
Lay low on the weekends
Running to the country where we got nothing to lose
Fed up with the city lights
No, I don't wanna spend my life in this place
I just wanna run away to Montana
Livin' at a slower pace with you
There's nothing else that I would need if I had ya
In Montana
I could wipe your tears away if you're crying
'Cause even cowgirls get the blues
There's nothing else that I would need if I had ya
In Montana
I wanna see the sky from a dirt road
I wanna feel the air cut through my coat
700 acres, so many new ways to see you
And all the seeds of love that we sow
I can see 'em grow as we grow
I just wanna run away to Montana
Living at a slower pace with you
There's nothing else that I would need if I had ya
In Montana
I could wipe your tears away if you're crying
'Cause even cowgirls get the blues
There's nothing else that I would need if I had ya
(In Montana)
Getting tired of the busy nights
Getting tired of the city lights
Yeah, I know I can't spend the rest of my life here
I just wanna run away to Montana
Living at a slower pace with you
There's nothing else that I would need if I had ya
In Montana
I could wipe your tears away if you're crying
'Cause even cowgirls get the blues
There's nothing else that I would need if I had ya

The song "Montana" by Daya talks about the desire to escape from the hustle and bustle of city life and move to a more peaceful place with a loved one. The lyrics express a yearning for a slower pace of life and the opportunity to grow old with new friends. The idea of escaping to a quiet place is reinforced with lines like "Running to the country where we got nothing to prove" and "I wanna see the sky from a dirt road."
Daya also realizes that even in a new place, there will be moments of sadness but assures her partner that she will always be there to wipe away their tears. The mention of cowgirls getting blues symbolizes that tough people also get emotional from time to time.
The overall message of the song is that the hustle and bustle of urban life can be overwhelming, and it's essential to take a step back and slow down every once in a while. The lyrics suggest that being in the company of a loved one is all that matters in such situations.

This is one of the only songs that makes me sad.
I love it so much because it shows me something that I never knew I wanted until now. I love every single thought of the chorus. I want this life and I want to spend it with someone I truly love. I just wanna live my life with love and happiness in mind as my priority. Life was meant to be as creative and beautiful as you make it. The thought of all of this makes me so happy that I can't help but cry because I hope that I will have this someday. Daya, thank you so much for this beautiful song.
This part is special to me, it's not much but it means a lot to me. 🥺

Montana is a lifestyle, not a getaway. You get back to your roots and feel humbled by it. Montana is where I ran away to, and I haven’t left since. ❤
@dude4173
Just moved to Montana from the city. Absolutely love it. Realizing now how stimulating and exhausting a city really is. Never knew it - was afraid of the move but I don’t see myself going back to a city ever again.
Great song that some people can relate to
@uniquekid401
