Face Of The Earth
Days of the New Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I'm the one receiving the pain from you
You would make these lies
I would take them true
You're self existing

No change of listening
Close your eyes I will help you pray
Listen to god and tell me what he said
(What he said)

I'm the one receiving the pain from you
Break me down so shove me in a shoe
You put it on and walk on me all day
It wouldn't surprise
It's something you would do
(You would do)

I am the ground and the dirt
Face of the earth
Face of the earth
I am the ground and the dirt
Walk on me

Face of the earth
Face of the earth
Face of the earth
Face of the earth

I'm the one receiving the pain from you
You would make these lies
I would take them true
You're self existing

No change of listening
Close your eyes I will help you pray
Listen to god and tell me what he said
(What he said)

I'm the one receiving the pain from you
Break me down so shove me in a shoe
You put it on and walk on me all day
It wouldn't surprise
It's something you would do
(You would do)

I am the ground and the dirt
Face of the earth
Face of the earth
I am the ground and the dirt
Walk on me
Face of the earth
Face of the earth

I am the ground and the dirt
Face of the earth
Face of the earth
I am the ground and the dirt
Walk on me

Face of the earth

Overall Meaning

In "Face of the Earth," the songwriter is expressing their feelings of being a doormat for someone else, both metaphorically and literally. The opening lines reveal that the singer is constantly receiving pain from someone they care about, although that person seems to be oblivious to how their actions are affecting them. Despite this mistreatment, the singer accepts and believes the lies that the other person tells them. The lines "I'm the one receiving the pain from you / Break me down so shove me in a shoe / You put it on and walk on me all day" emphasize the singer's feelings of being used and trodden upon.

The chorus amplifies this theme, as the singer sees themselves as the very ground beneath the other person's feet. They are the "face of the earth" and the dirt that they walk on. One interesting interpretation of the title line is that it could be a play on words, with "face" meaning both "surface" and "identity." In this sense, the singer feels like they are being erased and subsumed by the person they are addressing, as if they are nothing more than the ground on which that person walks.
