Misery
De-t-riot Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

It's the right time for the wrong intentions
I'd die just to cut the tension
Why try to hide behind my eyes
Breathe, sigh, inhale another lie

I see what I want to see
And misery looks good on me
I see what I want to see
Oh, sweet misery, take what you want from me

Oh, come on
Oh, come on
Oh, come on
Oh, come on

It's the right way in the wrong direction
I'd pray, but there's no connection
Blind faith, always such a waste
Oh, sweet misery, take what you want from me

Coming to grips with the kicks that I'm taking
Wearing it well, it's a new sensation

I see what I want to see
And misery looks good on me
I see what I want to see
Oh, sweet misery, take what you want from me

I see what I want to see (na, na na, na na, na)
And misery looks good on me
I see what I want to see (na, na na, na na, na)
Oh, sweet misery, take what you want from me

I've found myself a brand new low, a shiny home to call my own
Oh, come on!
Oh, come on! (Oh, sweet misery, take what you want from me)
Oh, come on!
Oh, come on! (Oh, sweet misery, take what you want from me)
Oh, come on!

I see what I want to see
And misery looks good on me
I see what I want to see
Oh, sweet misery, take what you want from me

I see what I want to see (na, na na, na na, na)
Oh, sweet misery, take what you want from me
I see what I want to see (na, na na, na na, na)
Oh, sweet misery, take what you want from me

Oh, come on (oh, sweet misery, take what you want from me)
Oh, come on

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of De-t-riot's song "Misery" convey a sense of embracing and even seeking out feelings of pain and suffering. The first verse suggests a willingness to sacrifice oneself in order to create tension or drama. The line "Why try to hide behind my eyes" can be interpreted as a refusal to conceal one's true emotions, opting instead to let them be seen by others. The repetition of "Breathe, sigh, inhale another lie" implies a cycle of deception and self-deception, where lies are internalized and accepted.

The chorus reveals a certain satisfaction in the state of misery. The lines "I see what I want to see, and misery looks good on me" highlight a deliberate choice to view and embrace the darker aspects of life. It suggests that the singer finds a certain allure or beauty in their own suffering. The exclamation of "Oh, sweet misery, take what you want from me" further emphasizes the acceptance and even surrender to these feelings.

The second verse introduces the concept of faith and its potential futility. "I'd pray, but there's no connection" suggests a disillusionment with spiritual or religious practices. The phrase "Blind faith, always such a waste" implies a belief that blindly putting trust in something higher is ultimately pointless.

The bridge of the song reflects a realization of the consequences of embracing misery. It acknowledges the pain and kicks that the singer endures but also expresses a strange satisfaction in wearing that pain well. This new sensation of accepting one's suffering appears to be both intriguing and addictive.

I'm in the business of misery
Let's take it from the top
She's got a body like an hourglass, it's ticking like a clock
It's a matter of time before we all run out
When I thought he was mine, she caught him by the mouth
I waited eight long months, she finally set him free
I told him I couldn't lie, he was the only one for me
Two weeks and we had caught on fire
She's got it out for me, but I wear the biggest smile
Whoa, I never meant to brag
But I got him where I want him now
Whoa, it was never my intention to brag
To steal it all away from you now
But God, does it feel so good
'Cause I got him where I want him now
And if you could, then you know you would
'Cause God it just feels so
It just feels so good
Second chances they don't ever matter, people never change
Once a whore, you're nothing more
I'm sorry, that'll never change
And about forgiveness, we're both supposed to have exchanged
I'm sorry, honey, but I passed it up, now look this way
Well, there's a million other girls who do it just like you
Looking as innocent as possible to get to who
They want and what they want, it's easy if you do it right
Well I refuse, I refuse, I refuse
Whoa, I never meant to brag
But I got him where I want him now
Whoa, it was never my intention to brag
To steal it all away from you now
But God, does it feel so good
'Cause I got him where I want him right now
And if you could, then you know you would
'Cause God, it just feels so
It just feels so good
I watched his wildest dreams come true
Not one of them involving you
Just watch my wildest dreams come true
Not one of them involving
Whoa, I never meant to brag
But I got him where I want him now
Whoa, I never meant to brag
But I got him where I want him now
Whoa, it was never my intention to brag
To steal it all away from you now
But God, does it feel so good
'Cause I got him where I want him now
And if you could then you know you would
'Cause God, it just feels so
It just feels so good

“this song was under-appreciated” no it wasn’t it was literally their breakout hit you were just a child who hadn’t hit their emo phase yet

@@hayleywastaken3603 it was very popular

@@hayleywastaken3603 ?? literally everyone in 2007-2015 were playing this on repeat, what are you talking about

exactly

@thepooaprinciple5144

@@hayleywastaken3603 The only type of people who offer words of criticism towards this song were never apart of it to begin with and are giving their criticism from an outsiders perspective. Those who were involved in popularizing this band have nothing but good words to say about it. And thats final....no further critique, analysis, or diagnosis is needed.

@ranwilliams1117

Honestly it was appreciated and played ALOT even now if you go into any department store, and if they have it on a pop station odds are you'll hear A paramore song. Back to this song in particular though back in "the day" as ppl are calling it... social media wasn't the master of all like it is now ppl had literal lives and enjoyed music with their friends and out in the world. No tik tok trends and stuff like that. So I'm sure its appreciation is beyond just what you can do a quick google search to find out. I still remember my ex gf singing this every night at karaoke. No it wasn't to me i sang back up 😅

Don't worry you're not the only one listening this masterpiece in 2022.

@jacoboribilik3253

it's a good song but calling it a masterpiece is a bit too much, objectively speaking.
