Storm
Deacon Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

That hurricane day
Will soon pass away
And someone will sweep
All the jetsam back into the bay
And we`ll come down
Like we always did
And knock on my door
Like the big bad wind
Born in a storm
Is that the only excuse you can give
Born in a storm
Is that you`re gonna live
Born in a storm
Is that the only excuse you can give

Born in a storm
Is that you`re gonna live

Overall Meaning

Deacon Blue’s song “Born In A Storm” is a poignant reflection on the power of one’s past to shape and define their future. The song starts with the lines “That hurricane day, will soon pass away, and someone will sweep all the jetsam back into the bay”. These lyrics can be interpreted to discuss the passing of time and how the storm, a metaphorical representation of a difficult or traumatic event, will eventually be forgotten. The idea of someone sweeping the remnants of the storm away symbolises the aftermath of a traumatic event, where the debris left behind can be cleaned up, but the scars remain.

The second verse is where the song really comes into its own. It starts with the lines “Born in a storm, is that the only excuse you can give?” and “Born in a storm, is that you’re gonna live?”. These words represent the notion that an individual can allow a difficult past to control them or they can rise above it and use it as a catalyst for positive transformation. The song acknowledges the idea that our past experiences can influence who we are but ultimately leaves it up to the listener to decide whether they will let it control them or whether they will take control of their own life.

With its powerful instrumentals and thought-provoking lyrics, “Born In A Storm” is a timeless classic that continues to resonate with people of all ages. Its message is one of hope and resilience, inspiring listeners to overcome adversity and live their lives to the fullest.

Spine tinglingly good performance  from DB- check out the whole concert on DVD ( singles collection). It stands as testament to the immense talent of this band. I have seen them many times live and it is a privilege to listen to them every time. I really wish I had been at the SECC performances ( filmed over two nights in December 1989) as it is the greatest live performance I have heard.
