Tempest
Dead Like Juliet Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

(And even though) our ship is full of treasures
I have never seen them
It lies heavy in the sea
With the weight of hope
Which we have charged

Just come aboard
We'll guide our ship through spindrift and fog
Without sails, without an anchor,
It's impossible to find our hometown harbour

We would die of homesickness
This ship is our worst
Nightmare and all that will remain,
Is floating in the maze of misery
And all you ever had
To call your very own
Is a driverless piece of wood
In the incessant sea

Our ship is full of treasures
I have never seen them
It lies heavy in the sea
With the weight of hope
Which we have charged

(And even though) our ship is full of treasures
I have never seen them
It lies heavy in the sea
With the weight of hope
Which we have charged

Confused and gambling with the lost souls
We hope we get swallowed by the sea
How I wish I could be in your place,
But If the ship must sink,
The captain goes down with it.

The captain goes down with it
And he will never come up again

Save me, cause you're a part of me
Don't tear us apart
Just don't let me.
NEVER LET ME GO!
Never let me go...

Save me, cause you're a part of me
Don't tear us apart
Just don't let me.
NEVER LET ME GO!
Never let me go...

We would die of homesickness
This ship is our worst nightmare
And all that will remain
Is floating in the maze of misery
And all we'll ever see...
IS NOTHING
Nothing more than the deep blue sea

Long time no see, dear shore, I'll leave!
Captain, please give me a sign!
That land is in sight.

If our ship must sink
I will go down with it.

Our ship is full of treasures
I have never seen them
It lies heavy in the sea
With the weight of hope
Which we have charged

(And even though) our ship is full of treasures
I have never seen them
It lies heavy in the sea
With the weight of hope
Which we have charged

Take me to the ground

Overall Meaning

The song Tempest by Dead Like Juliet is a combination of imagery and metaphors that suggest the idea of being lost or adrift without any specific place to go, a theme that is commonly used in literature and music. The song begins with the lines "our ship is full of treasures, I have never seen them, it lies heavy in the sea, with the weight of hope which we have charged." Here, the ship represents life, and the "treasures" are the opportunities and possibilities that come with it. However, despite the abundance of these treasures, the singer has not been able to take advantage of them, and instead, the ship lies heavy in the sea, weighed down by hope.

The lyrics go on to suggest that the ship is navigating through rough waters, "spindrift and fog," and without an anchor or sails, it is impossible to find a "hometown harbour." This is a metaphorical description of the confusion and uncertainty of life, and the idea that it is difficult to find a place of belonging or a sense of purpose without direction. The line "we would die of homesickness" emphasizes the idea that as humans, we need a sense of belonging and stability, and without it, we can feel lost and disconnected.

The theme of hopelessness and despair is repeated throughout the song, with lines such as "floating in the maze of misery," and "all we'll ever see... is nothing." The chorus suggests that the singer is reaching out for help, asking to be saved, and not torn apart from the ones they love. The song continues with the idea that the captain of the ship will go down with it if it must sink, emphasizing the idea of taking responsibility for one's own life and choices.

I've never gotten so "fired up" by a song so regularly before. Normally that feeling fades after a few listens on other songs, but I've listened to this a solid 100+ times and it gets me going no differently than it did the first time. Amazing song guys.
