Fred Cole has engineered most of the band's recordings and mastered them on a mono lathe that was used for The Kingsmen's version of "Louie Louie."
Their early records, such as In the Graveyard, were released on the Tombstone Records label, named for the musical equipment store Fred and Toody operated at the time. Soon they caught the attention of the German label Music Maniac, and toured Europe successfully. Not until the mid-nineties did they tour the United States. Much of their following is in Europe.
A U.S. filmmaking team (Kate Fix and Jason Summers) produced a 2004 documentary, Unknown Passage: The Dead Moon Story, which played in independent theaters around the U.S., New Zealand, and Melbourne International Film Fest, and might be offered with the upcoming Dead Moon box set on Sub Pop Records. Dead Moon has recorded for labels such as Empty Records, but most releases are on Music Maniac abroad and Tombstone in the U.S. The Tombstone label has also provided cheap mastering and duplication for other bands, serving more as a cooperative than a promotional vehicle.
Fred and Toody are in their sixties. They currently own the Tombstone General Store in Clackamas, Oregon, and are building a shopping center nearby.
Pearl Jam often covers the song It's OK.
In December 2006 they retired:
2006-12-13 - AN ANNOUNCEMENT FROM DEAD MOON
After 20 yrs, Dead Moon is retiring. It has been a journey we will always treasure and feel that a worldwide family has emerged in its place. Dead Moon became much bigger than the band itself, it became a DIY underground hopeful for a lot of people. The candle is still burning!

For the first time in a long time, Fred and Toody Cole were nervous. Six months after the breakup of their legendary garage-rock outfit, Dead Moon, the Coles were about to debut a new groupβsomething they havenβt had to do for 20 years. And their new trio, Pierced Arrows, had only six practices under its belt at showtime.

A Fix on You
Dead Moon Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
You can't keep coming back once you walk out that door
I don't know why I take it time and again
You're like a building on fire
Rockets in the sky
The heat of the city that's burning in my eyes
I never should have fell for you
Let you do me like you do
How can you tell me in the dark of despair
That I'm the only one who ever really cared
How many times have you said it to the others
Things being said, talk going down
There's been rumors in the alley and they're gettin' uptown
I never shoulda listened to you
Every lie you tell's like the truth
And I can't, I can't get a fix on you
Every time I get the courage to kiss it all goodbye
I start thinkin' 'bout the moments you keep creepin' in my life
Every time I tell you this will be the last time
The building catches fire
The rockets in the sky
The heat of the city starts burning in my eyes
I never shoulda fell for you
Let you do me like you do
And I can't, I can't get a fix on you
The lyrics of "A Fix on You" by Dead Moon explore the theme of a tumultuous and unstable romantic relationship. The singer seems to be stuck in a cycle of forgiveness and betrayal with their partner, who keeps leaving but always finds a way to come back. The singer knows that this is not a healthy situation, but they can't help being drawn in by the passion and intensity of their relationship. The metaphor of a building on fire and rockets in the sky suggests that the emotions involved are overwhelming and dangerous, but also exhilarating.
The second verse introduces an element of jealousy and suspicion into the relationship. The singer questions whether their partner really cares about them or if they are just telling the same lies to other people. The reference to "rumors in the alley" suggests that their partner may be unfaithful or at least not fully committed to the relationship. Despite this, the singer is still unable to break away from the hold that their partner has on them. The chorus repeats the idea that the singer can't "get a fix" on their partner, implying that they are addicted to the thrill of the relationship but can't ever truly understand or control it.
Overall, "A Fix on You" is a powerful depiction of a relationship that is both destructive and compelling. The lyrics are full of vivid imagery and emotion, capturing the intense feelings of love, betrayal, and confusion that often accompany romantic entanglements.
