Somewhere Along The Way
Dean Martin Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I used to walk with you along the avenue
Our hearts were carefree and gay
How could I know I'd lose you
Somewhere along the way
The friends we used to know would always smile hello
No love like ours they'd say
Then love slipped through our fingers
Somewhere along the way
I should forget but with the loneliness of night I start remembering
Everything you're gonna get
There's still a feeling deep inside that you will always be part of me
So now I look for you along the avenue
And as I wander I pray
That someday soon I'll find you
Somewhere along the way
So now I look for you along the avenue
And as I wander I pray

That someday soon I'll find you
Somewhere along the way

Overall Meaning

Dean Martin's song "Somewhere Along The Way" speaks of a lost love that the singer had shared with someone. The singer walks down the avenue, reflecting on the happy times he once shared with his lover. He did not realize, however, that they would eventually lose each other somewhere along the way. The people around them used to admire their love and comment about how unique it was, but fate took its course and their love slipped through their fingers.

The loneliness of the night reminds the singer of all the moments he shared with this lost love. Despite everything that's happened, the singer still feels connected to his lover, and he believes that they will always hold a special place in each other's heart. He continues to wander down the avenue, looking for his lover and praying that someday, they will find each other once again. This song speaks to the idea that even when love is lost, it can still hold a special place in the hearts of those who shared it.

I always thought that no-one could sing this song in any way to compare with Nat King Cole. I was wrong. This is an excellent version.

I won't compare like you asks us to, since this is one of many songs recorded live in a radio station. No studio recording was made (to my knowledge). After hearing this, I will listen to Miss Kenney's version, just to please you!

Fernanda

Lovely song!!!!!

"THE SE WERE SONGS!!)

I'll assume this is taken from the Martin and Lewis show on NBC Radio, circa 1951-52.  It wasn't unusual for various artists in that era to cut the same songs for their own albums, and even as competing singles.  Dean probably cut it just for radio, deciding not to put it on a record.
