Pretty as a picture
Dean Martin & Nat King Cole Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You're as pretty as a picture
In your brand new evening gown
Within your eyes I see that starlight of old
With that smile a little bold
What a lovely lovely picture
You're my treasured work of art
And I'll always keep your picture
Locked in a room in my heart
You're as pretty as a picture
In your brand new evening gown
Within your eyes I see that starlight of old
With that smile a little bold
What a lovely lovely picture
You're my treasured work of art

And I'll always keep your picture
Locked in a room in my heart

Overall Meaning

Dean Martin's "Pretty as a Picture" is a sweet and delicate love song that expresses admiration for the beauty of the woman he loves. The opening lines, "You're as pretty as a picture, in your brand new evening gown," give listeners the impression of the woman's pristine and stunning appearance. The singer goes on to describe how he sees a twinkle of the starlight of old in her eyes and how her smile is bold and confident, which only adds to her beauty.

Martin's metaphorical language likens the woman to a treasured work of art that he never wants to lose. In the final lines, he declares that he will always keep her picture locked away in his heart like a piece of cherished artwork. The song's romantic themes are further accentuated by Martin's smooth and dreamy voice, as well as the catchy melody, which add to the warm sentimentality of the lyrics.

L is for the way you look at me
O is for the only one I see
V is very, very, extraordinary
E is even more than anyone that you adore can
Love is all that I can give to you
Love is more than just a game for two
Two in love can make it
Take my heart and please don't break it
Love was made for me and you
L is for the way you look at me
O is for the only one I see
V is very, very, extraordinary
E is even more than anyone that you adore can
Love is all that I can give to you
Love is more than just a game for two
Two in love can make it
Take my heart and please don't break it
Love was made for me and you
Love was made for me and you
Love was made for me and you

Can't believe this is the last song Nat King Cole recorded just days before he entered the hospital for cancer treatment. Early Dec 1964, then February 1965 he died. Amazing talent.

@Coowallsky

Nope. He recorded it some time before Sept. 1964. That's date is when the single was released.
