Absence Of The Heart
Deana Carter Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I write you letters, but I don't send ?em
I just can't figure out how to end them
I try to reach you, you're right beside me
There's something missing and we can't deny that

We live together separately
We don't want to fall apart
But every time we kiss there's an emptiness
An absence of the heart

We live together separately
We don't want to fall apart
But every time we kiss there's an emptiness
An absence of the heart

We live together separately
We don't want to fall apart
But every time we kiss there's an emptiness
An absence of the heart

But every time we kiss there's an emptiness
An absence of the heart

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of “Absence of the Heart” by Deana Carter explore the theme of the breakdown of a romantic relationship. The song's speaker writes letters to her partner, but she never sends them because she doesn't know how to end them. Although they are physically together, there is a feeling of something missing between them. The lines “We live together separately, We don't want to fall apart” suggest that the couple might be trying to hold onto their relationship, but the lack of emotional connection makes it difficult. Every time they kiss, there is a sense of emptiness and a void in their hearts.

The title of the song, “Absence of the Heart,” is a powerful metaphor for the missing love and deep emotional bond that is needed in a relationship. These emotions are typically associated with the heart. The repetition of the lines “We live together separately” along with “An absence of the heart” creates a sense of loneliness and isolation. The song captures the idea that love needs nurturing and attention to survive, and once it's gone, it's tough to regain. The emptiness and loneliness in the song are palpable and leave a significant impact on the listener.

I remember this song because the part of the song that goes "there's something missing and we can't deny it" has a melody that matches a part of the Goron theme in Ocarina of Time, a game that came out the same year as this song, so whenever I play through that game, I remember this song.

I don't know why nobody remembers this song. It's a good song.

Wow! I forgot what a great song this is. Everyone remember Strawberry Wine, but this is a really great song!

You just bring me to life when I listen to you

Deana hit #16 in Billboard, 12-98, God bless ya, for postin' it! Thanx!

Henry Richards

Can't believe this only has 537 likes! A beautiful, thoughtful song sung by a gorgeous, real woman. Yet some vacuous pop nonsense can get thousands of likes in  day. A sad commentary...

Tiernan Flaherty

Beautiful sad tune, it just unfortunately doomed her career by being the first single followup to a smash Country Pop success album.

Quentin Fernandez

One of her best songs. Love it and the video too.
