Born and raised in L.A., Flores adopted the stage alias DeathbyRomy at the age of 15. Struggling with depression and instances of bullying, she soon dropped out of high school to pursue a career in music. Her first album was inspired by her experiences over the next couple years as she found ways to overcome negativity. Early songs including "Blood" and "Wonder Boy" (featuring Violet Kennedy) appeared online in 2016. Collaborations with Los Angeles hip-hop artists Glitter Princess and LePlay were among the dozen or so additional tracks she shared before issuing her debut album, Monsters, in September of 2018. It included appearances by Yung Bans, Lil B, and Cuban Doll. An EP, Love U - to Death, arrived in October 2019 and included the track "Problems."

Eyes wide shut, I'm flying blind
Don't forget your piece of mind
I'm pocket change i'm useless space
I'm nothing more than an old face
You use me up to let me go
I'm pocket change i'm empty space
I'm nothing more than an old face
You use me up to let me go
Don't pretend I do not know
I'm pocket change i'm empty space
I'm nothing more than an old face
You use me up to let me go
Don't pretend I do not know
Hello, love i'm leaving now
I got my ticket but I left my crown
No turning back i made my mind and
Don't you try to waste my time
I'm pocket change i'm empty space
I'm nothing more than an old face
You use me up to let me go
Don't pretend I do not know
The lyrics of DeathbyRomy's "Pocket Change" are a poignant reflection on feeling worthless and disposable to someone. The opening line, "wake me up, I'm breaking down," hints at a sense of desperation and exhaustion, as if the singer has been drained of energy and needs to be revitalized. The following line, "eyes wide shut, I'm flying blind," indicates a sense of disorientation and not being able to see things clearly. It's possible that the singer has been in a relationship or situation where they've been manipulated or mistreated, and their trust has been shattered.
The chorus of the song reveals the crux of the matter: the singer feels like nothing more than "pocket change" or "useless space" to the person they're addressing. They feel like they're being used up and cast aside, and they're fully aware of it. The repetition of this theme throughout the song emphasizes how deeply the singer has internalized this feeling of being disposable. The line "I got my ticket but I left my crown" in the second verse suggests that the singer has decided to move on from this toxic situation, but it's also a clear indication of the power dynamic at play. They've given up their sense of self and their identity in exchange for a ticket out. The final line, "don't you try to waste my time," conveys a newfound sense of strength and determination. The singer has realized that they deserve better than to be treated like pocket change, and they're not going to tolerate it anymore.
Overall, "Pocket Change" is a powerful and emotionally raw song that speaks to the universal experience of feeling undervalued and unappreciated. It's a testament to DeathbyRomy's talent as a songwriter and her ability to capture complex emotions in her lyrics.

Have you considered joining the jungle/dnb/liquid/neurofunk scene? Your biggest song was Average and the tempo shift is a key. I wish I could find your vocal stems to make some dnb remixes
