After their first 1999 self-titled album, their subsequent album L’homme à tue-tête released in May, 2001 gained them media acclaim and public popularity. By the time their 2004 album Des singes et les moutons enhanced their repertoire, they were selling out venues such as La Cigale and touring internationally. Songs from their latest album Les Promesses were featured in their first concert at the oldest music hall in Paris, the Olympia, where they played to a full house on May 16, 2006.
The band acknowledges influences from traditional French and Irish music, rock, klezmer, and many styles that are considered dance hall music, such as gypsy jazz, tango, waltz. Music critics and fans admire their ability to mix these different styles into an exuberant, cohesive whole.
They are known to be friends with bands like La Rue Kétanou or Les Ogres de Barback.

The song "Ne vous mariez pas les filles" by Debout sur le Zinc is a warning for young women not to marry. The lyrics describe various scenarios of unpleasant men and the difficulties of married life. In the first verse, the singer asks if we have seen a man coming out of the bathroom, dripping with water and sad, or a man eating spaghetti awkwardly and getting sauce on his shirt. The singer then concludes that when men are beautiful, they are foolish; when they are old, they are ugly; when they are tall, they are lazy, and when they are small, they are mean. In the second verse, the lyrics describe a man coming home late with lipstick on his collar and wobbling on his legs or a man behaving inappropriately with a young girl at a cabaret. The refrain re-emphasizes the singer's message: "Don't get married, girls."
The song is a satirical take on societal expectations of women to get married and have a family. It portrays marriage as a burden for women and warns them to avoid it. The song offers alternative lifestyles such as pursuing a career in the arts, working as waitresses, raising animals, or taking up a religious vocation instead of marriage. The song is a feminist critique of patriarchal structures that limit women's choices.
