Begin Again

Like tryin to fit into this pretty new dress
Doesn't feel right, doesn't hang right
Doesn't seem like mine
Did I hear you say you felt like this?
Aren't we all a little lonely?
Aren't we all on the run?
Don't we all wanna be somebody's only one?
Something always on the mend
But just when you wanna give up hope and it all comes crashin in
You begin again. Begin again.
Standin on a ragged edge
Someone's letting out my perfect hem
So I strip down to the thin sound of a drowning fear
Did I hear you say it's cold in here?
Aren't we all a little lonely?
Aren't we all on the run?
Don't we all wanna be somebody's only one?
Aren't we all a little broken?
Something always on the mend.
But just when you wanna give up hope and it all comes crashin in
You begin again. Begin again
The song Begin Again by Debra Davis speaks about the transient nature of happiness and the feeling of inadequacy that comes with it. The lyrics start by comparing fleeting happiness to fitting into a new dress that doesn't quite feel right. The singer wonders if anyone else has felt this way before. The second half of the first verse is a call and response format where the singer asks if everyone is a little lonely and on the run, and if everyone wants to be someone's only one. It's clear that the singer is seeking connection and a sense of belonging.
The chorus of the song reiterates the idea that everyone is a little broken and always on the mend, but that just when you feel like giving up hope, something unexpected comes along and you begin again. The second verse continues with the analogy of a dress being hemmed too short, as the singer feels exposed and vulnerable. The singer pauses to listen for someone else's voice in the cold, suggesting that they are not alone in feeling this way. The chorus repeats, but this time with a slight variation in the final line, emphasizing the idea that the singer is not alone in beginning again.
Overall, the song speaks to the human condition of experiencing life's ups and downs, searching for connection, and finding the resilience to begin again. It's a reminder that we all have moments of feeling lost, but that these moments do not define us and that we can always start again.
