Power Of Love
Deee-Lite Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I believe in the power of love (I believe)
I believe in the power of love (I believe)
I believe in the power of love
I believe in the power of love

Feel the power
Let the people call me naive
I believe I believe I believe I believe

What is it that can make a lost soul found?
Love
And what is it that can make the coldest day seem warm?
Love
And what is it that can bring a smile through to strangers?
Love love love love

I believe in the power of love (I believe)
I believe in the power of love (I believe)
I believe in the power of love
Let them call me naieve
But I still believe

What is it that can make a lost soul found?
Love
And what is it that can make the coldest day seem warm?
Love
And what is it that can bring a smile through to strangers?

Give it everything
'Cause what you give you get so give it everything
Open your heart

I believe I believe
Power of power of power of love

The song acknowledges love's transformative powers including its ability to mend a lost soul, bring warmth to even the coldest of days, and even bring a smile to strangers.

The chorus, "give it everything, 'cause what you give you get, so give it everything, open your heart" emphasizes the importance of giving and vulnerability in love. This continues to be a go-to song for me. Used to go to Chicago to see you when I was living/studying in Madison.

Eight days ago my little 21+ year old dog Pomeranian 'Mister Baby' died in my arms during a seizure, no pulse, no heartbeat, no breathing, completely gone. From deep within me as I was overtaken by grief, several minutes after he had passed, but still holding his little body in my arms, I screamed at the top of my lungs in my voice of god voice "I LOVE YOU MISTER BABY!!!!!!!!"

and he came back!
Mister Baby took a HUGE gasp of air, his heart started POUNDING, he looked at me like "WTF is going on?!!!" and HE LIVES!!!!!!

So yes, I believe in the power of love, and this song is the ANTHEM for that!!!

Thank you for all the joy, love, and fun you have brought, and will continue to bring ino this world, where it is much needed!!!

This was the kind of creative club/art/street kids we were in the late 80's-early 90's NYC!!! We made our clothes, dumpster dived. It was heaven.

@johnnyatab

When these guys came out, there was nothing else like them. There still isn't. One of a kind.

@tomasandrew9354

Absolutely. The kids today will never know. They think they do, but they don’t 😆

@jordan_gold

This came out 3 years before I was born. I would do anything to go live in NYC in the late 80s and witness this scene flourish.

@dennishartnett684

I understand how you feel, but you'd also be dealing with untreatable HIV, and it's devastation on the arts community in NYC and everywhere else. I was 30 in 1988 and these were frightening, sorrowful years. Believe me, you would not to relive them.

@tomasotreasaigh111

One hit wonder more like.

I'm 14 in 2019 and I'm a Deee-Lite fan :-)

I saw them live in SF and not one person in the audience was sitting down. It was a wall to wall party. Add Bootsy to the mix and this was one of the BEST concerts I've ever been to. Even my metal loving boyfriend was digging it. Two hours of nonstop dancing.

@joltjolt5060

I'm so jello rn. You saw both! Serotonin overload. Sadly now I'm in sw Florida and concerts are a Rapefest here. You must be in se Florida. I used to live there, kick ass concerts.

@locoxoconostle

I was there too. Absolute joy, a wonderful upbeat happy audience, and what a great show! "How do you say ... San Francisco?"
