Anthem
Deep Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

When the night wind softly blows through my open window
Then I start to remember the girl that brought me joy
Now the night wind softly blows sadness to tomorrow
Bringing tears to eyes so tired
Eyes I thought could cry no more

If the day would only come
Then you might just appear
Even though you'd soon be gone
When I reached out my hand

If I could see you
If only I could see you
To see if you are laughing or crying
When the night winds softly blow

In my dark and whispering room
Memories still bring me a numbness to my feelings
Take my hand and brush my brow
In the warm and fevered dark
Heart is madly beating
My crazy thoughts are burning
When the night winds softly blow

If the day would only come
Then you might just appear
Even though you'd soon be gone
When I reached out my hand

If I could see you
If only I could see you
To see if you are laughing or crying
When the night winds softly blow

If the day would only come
Then you might just appear
Even though you'd soon be gone
When I reached out my hand

If I could see you
If only I could see you

To see if you are laughing or crying
When the night winds softly blow

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Deep Purple's "Anthem" convey a sense of longing and nostalgia for a lost love. The opening line describes the gentle breeze of a night wind blowing through an open window, which triggers memories of a girl who once brought joy to the singer's life. However, now the wind brings sadness and tears to their eyes. The singer wishes for the day when they might be reunited with this lost love, if only for a brief moment, so that they can see if she is happy or sad.

The second verse intensifies the emotions, as the memories of the lost love still bring a numbness to the singer's feelings even while alone in a dark and whispering room. The idea of physically touching the hand of the lost love is again repeated, suggesting a desperate desire for connection. The final lines repeat the wish for a reunion, to see if the lost love is laughing or crying in response to the night wind.

Overall, this song captures the wistful longing for a past love that may never be fully resolved. The night wind serves as a metaphor for the fleeting nature of emotions and our inability to fully control or understand them.

The time of my life- I had just turned 16, was in blinding turmoil- parents divorced, oldest of four kids, and we were all clinging to the music that spoke volumes for us while we dealt with a new found level of poverty. I was an aspiring keyboard player with genetic talent- I played by ear naturally. I grew up playing a Howard baby grand that was my grandmother's, and first learned Deep Purple on that. Then I moved out of the house and got a Yamaha Electone, and had to learn that most electronic keyboards had no weight to the keys, something I had depended upon for timing with a piano. New learning experience! Jon Lord was my keyboard idol. To learn the keyboard lines by ear, I would play my record at speed 16 bar by bar, and transpose the key. This was my introduction to classical music...through classically trained Deep Purple!
