Flashdance
Deep Dish/Stevie Nicks Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

He doesn't mean a thing to me
Just another pretty face to see
He's all over town, knocking 'em down, yeah honey
And I'd never let him next to me

Well, he's the kind of guy who thinks he's smart
He's the type that always looks the part
He's on the make, he's on the take, yeah honey
And I'd never let him touch my heart

He didn't mean to catch my eye
Well he's lucky he just walked on by
'Cause he hasn't met a girl like me
Are you kidding?
Well, I'd tell him that I'd rather die

He doesn't mean a thing to me
Just another pretty face to see
He's all over town, knocking 'em down, yeah honey
And I'd never let him next to me

Well, he's the kind of guy who thinks he's smart
He's the type that always looks the part
He's on the make, he's on the take, yeah honey
And I'd never let him touch my heart

He didn't mean to catch my eye
Well, he's lucky he just walked on by
'Cause he hasn't met a girl like me

Are you kidding?
Well, I'd tell him that I'd rather die

Overall Meaning

In Deep Dish's song Flashdance, the singer describes a man who doesn't mean a thing to her. He is just another pretty face in town who thinks he's smart and always looks the part. He goes around town, knocking down girls, but the singer wouldn't let him near her. She is not interested in his antics and wouldn't let him touch her heart.

The singer's disdain for this man is obvious as she repeats the same lines throughout the entire song. She is confident of her self-worth and knows she deserves better than someone who is always on the make and on the take. The man catches her eye but she is quick to brush off any interest he might have had in her. She would rather die than be with someone like him.

The song's lyrics emphasize the singer's independence and her unwillingness to settle for just another man. She prioritizes her own worth and standards, and it's clear that this man doesn't meet them. The song carries a message of self-empowerment and knowing one's own worth.

Now here you go again
You say you want your freedom
Well who am I to keep you down?
It's only right that you should
Play it the way you feel it
But listen carefully to the sound of your loneliness
Like a heartbeat, drives you mad
In the stillness of remembering what you had
And what you lost
And what you had
And what you lost

Thunder only happens when it's raining
Players only love you when they're playing
Say, women, they will come and they will go
When the rain washes you clean, you'll know
You will know, you will know, you will know, you'll know

Now here I go again, I see the crystal visions
I keep my visions to myself
It's only me who wants to wrap around your dreams and
Have you any dreams you'd like to sell?
Dreams of loneliness
Like a heartbeat, drives you mad
In the stillness of remembering what you had
And what you lost
What you had
And what you lost

Thunder only happens when it's raining
Players only love you when they're playing
Say, women, they will come and they will go
When the rain washes you clean, you'll know
You will know, you will know, you'll know, you will know
You will know, you will know, you will know
