Brothers
Defeater Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

He got her the nicest headstone he could afford- anything for his girl. He would tell her about mother, about how his hands shook without her. How if he don’t drink they would shake even worse. She would have never wanted to see him this way, and he felt ashamed each time he brought it up. One day, he just stopped going. He couldn’t stand himself any longer.

You sit, and you stir
You grieve and you grieve
The same chair as your old man
Your mother’s worse than you think
Sunken eyes and a withering frame
The needle quiets the longing
That poison, it fills… it fills her veins

So quiet when the pain comes
Your mother’s rosary ain’t bringing father home
Blood rushes with cigarette burns
There ain’t no God coming to save her
So quiet as the clouds roll
Your mother’s rosary wrapped on the bed post
Blood rushes with cigarette burns
On that dock every night until your head hurts

You sit, and you stir
You grieve and you grieve
The longer you sit at the ocean
You lose more time than you think
Your blood runs cold
Wind biting under your coat
Pull it tight to your chest
Your mother is praying for death
Much more than you know

So quiet when the pain comes
Your mother’s rosary ain’t bringing father home
Blood rushes with cigarette burns
There ain’t no God coming to save her
So quiet as the clouds roll
Your mother’s rosary wrapped on the bed post
Blood rushes with cigarette burns
On that dock every night until your head hurts

“You coward - this is your fault
Our family has lost everything”
“You coward - this is your fault
Our family has lost everything”

Look down at your hands and your lit cigarette
Put it to your lips and breathe it in

Everything starts to fade and your body is numb
And when you wake in the morning - you’re in the house all alone

Overall Meaning

The song "Brothers" by Defeater tells the story of a man who is struggling to deal with the loss of his loved ones. The song portrays the feeling of helplessness and desperation that arises when one is faced with the inevitability of death. In the first verse, the man is described as being devoted to his deceased girlfriend by visiting her grave often to share stories of his life and to apologize for how his life has turned out. He is portrayed as being unable to function without his girlfriend and turns to alcohol to deal with the pain. The man succumbs to his guilt and stops visiting her grave, feeling ashamed of not being able to find a way to cope with his loss.

The second verse sheds light on another tragedy in the man’s life, that of his mother being an addict. The song highlights the pain of witnessing someone you love being consumed by addiction and the feeling of helplessness that comes with it. The man feels lost, watching as his mother slowly withers away, seeking refuge from the emptiness of life in lethal habits. He feels as though he is losing more time than he thought and has no power to make things right. The lyrics "you lose more time than you think" encapsulate the feeling of being hollow inside and numb towards life.

The chorus repeats the pain and tragedy of addiction and the desperation that comes with it. The man's mother's rosary cannot bring back the father or cure the mother of addiction. The song portrays a helplessness and hopelessness in the face of death and addiction.

I remember listening to this from a friend, he burned this album just for me. I listened to this secretly on my walkman so my younger brother wont know what i spent our money on(batteries). Back then. We literally went through hell, had no one but my younger brother. I had no support but my brother. We survived trough the orphanage. All our escape attempts. Its a bitter memory but the things we did for each other made it beautiful. Ill never forget every kind hearted people we met before we got into the orphanage. For those who helped us, reading this and you're familiar with the lifestyle of a south east asian orphanage/dorm/boys home, i wanna thank you for not seperating us siblings from birth. I genuinely wanted to thank you all. We finished school at a late age. At least, Now he's working abroad as a civil engineer. Im a firefighter and listening to this song again, made me love my brother more than ever. We would sacrifice the world for one another.
