Early rehearsals in Justin's parents house were followed by a move to secret rehearsal space behind some storage cartons in the basement of Glasgow Art Centre (now defunct). Later on the band secured official rehearsal space at the Art Centre in a proper room with a cupboard to keep their gear in. Postcard Record signing and future megastars Aztec Camera rehearsed in the room next door. At this time Paul Tyagi (drums) joined the band as its first drummer. The first recorded Del Amitri track "What she Calls it" was the B side of a flexi-disc given away free with Stand and Deliver fanzine - the A side was given to another future Glasgow megaband The Bluebells. Unable to read music, early Del tracks were arranged and remembered according to 'bits' named after musical influences that included from Genesis, Captain Beefheart and Orange Juice.
Guitarists Bentley and Scobbie left in 1982 for university and the band faced a brief uncertain future until Justin Currie placed an advert in the window of a music store asking for people who could play to contact him, and the new line-up was formed with Currie (bass and vocals), Iain Harvie (lead guitar), Bryan Tolland (guitar) and Paul Tyagi (drums). The first non-flexi 45 single was 'Crows in the Wheatfield' with cover design by artist Laura Michael. Tyagi left after the release of the first album three years later becoming a successful photographer. Currie and Harvie were the only members of the band to remain present throughout its history – they were also the main songwriters of the group.
Jon McLoughlin (recorded and toured with the band during 'Some Other Suckers Parade') passed away in March 2005 from complications of Diabetes. He was 42.
In The Meantime
Del Amitri Lyrics

Or maybe you're relieved
I guess we both stopped trying Baby to believe
And maybe you are hurting badly
Or maybe you feel free
Taking one last journey with me away from you and me
And what are we to do
Living in the meantime until we find somebody new
Maybe this will help you now
Give you room to breathe
Or maybe all the pain you feel will never ever leave
And who is there to turn to now
Who can help us make it through
Living in the meantime until we find somebody new
So you said you loved me baby
For the last time now it seems
And I said I loved you baby, but I don't know what that means
And who is there to lie to now
How do I survive this without you
Living in the meantime until we find somebody new
In "In The Meantime", Del Amitri explores the aftermath of a relationship breakup. The singer reports some ambiguity about how his ex-partner is feeling, but at the same time, is fully aware that they have both given up on trying to keep the relationship going. The song reflects on how life goes on after the end of an intense emotional experience. The lyrics hint at the possibility of the relationship being a mutually painful one, but with some relief and breathing room in the aftermath.
In the chorus, the singer asks what to do now that the relationship is over, and the breakup has left them both without somebody to turn to. It narrates the struggle of coping with the pain and uncertainty of moving on. The song argues that there are no easy answers and suggests that all that is left is to live in the meantime, hoping that something or someone new will come along.
The song's mood is bittersweet, as the singer appears to have mixed emotions about the end of the relationship, and the pain it has caused is weighed against the potential for a fresh start. The song is characterised by laid-back guitar work and wistful vocals, with the lyrics tackling the complexities of a broken heart.
