I am a reef hobbyist for 8 years now and love having a small slice of this life in my living room (150 Gallons). I do not know a single hobbyist who would not want an octopus for thier saltwater aquarium, but they are super intelligent and make Houdini look like an amateur when it comes to escaping enclosures. So, it is not possible to house these animals in small saltwater reef aquariums for this reason. Some are poisonous as well, such as the blue-ringed octopus (No anti-venom exists, however, only 3 fatalities on record). I love watching thier behavior, FASCINATING animals! As you saw, they are camouflogue experts which is one of thier main self-defense mechanisms. I love you guys, especially your precious daughter. Great episode guys, TY.

We did the same thing you guys are doing and it was the highlight of our Pacific cruising. We went to Rose Atoll, and a bunch of lovely atolls in the Louisade Archipelago PNG like Conflict atoll. Conflict was the most untouched of all of them. And the clearest water. BUT, internet was not invented, so we were totally isolated. And we cruised with our small daughter too! Enjoy. By the way the people build fishing shacks like the one you saw, in the isolated islands. They travel from their home island to fish for a few months. Therefore the large cistern.

Moments/thoughts that jump out for me: Stillness before a storm = immediately think of the desert. America's "the ocean is a desert with it's life underground" and how the hair on my neck would go up in the stillness right before a Mistral in Sardegna. And Sierra's "Dad is so silly." got to love it. Thinking about alone time: Do you ever enjoy it so much that you stay away from social media? I once spent a month alone up on northern Vancouver Island. A few days before coming back, I saw someone coming down a trail and hid while they passed because I didn't want to break the spell. It's kinda like that perfect moment of meditation but maybe takes a little more work to get to. As always, love you guys. Hugs from Memphis (yuck) Tennessee!

Unbelievable that you could remain secluded for that long of time with the number of cruisers out there. Kaza, at first I didn't know how to take your look - i.e., whether you were freaked out or actually happy/at peace with the aloneness! 2 weeks would not be a hardship for me - neither would a month or a year! I, personally, thrive in aloneness. If you want to learn more about octopus' and the AMAZING sentient beings they are, I recommend reading Sy Montgomery's "The Soul of an Octopus". I guarantee you that after reading it, you will never again view these animals in quite the same way again! The behavior it exhibited to you guys is quite normal - including 'rushing the camera', as you put it - they are very curious and intelligent creatures, as well as playful. It shows its' emotions by changing colors (red is excited, white is resting) as well as trying to protect itself from predators by sometimes changing to the color of its environment. I am so envious! The hustle and bustle of every day life is not all it’s cracked up to be. I could sure use a few weeks of complete solitude. Sorry I ever left French Polynesian to come back to Oklahoma.

Looks like Heaven to me. I used to work upstate NY every May-October to manage a small zoo. Sure in July and August we were swamped, but after Labor day, and in May and early June, there were several weeks that went by without me having a conversation (except to the animals.......) It is jarring sometimes when you realize you haven't spoken in days, but I loved it. I would love to circumnavigate, solo, and stick around the doldrums and coast a lot, play guitar just bobbing on the open sea, dozens or hundreds of miles from anything.................thanks for allowing us to live vicariously through your lens. Often I set up my ASMR (Delos just sailing for hours) to sleep in the mornings. Thanks again.

Yes, gotta love the Octopus family, they have so many creative little quirks ! And dolphins if you get to know them ! "picking" crab was such a slow job. We used to boil them a lot.

Oh, man...I DREAM of that. I mean, mebbe not for a lifetime, but for a month, fantastic! Reminds me of Chagos...the isolation was transcendental. Thank you, deeply, for taking us along. BTW, I think it's warsh-yur-sister sauce.

The three of you have each other. Consider, for a moment, the people who are truly alone and not for only a month. Imagine how that must feel. Your isolation is by choice. For others, there isn't an option. 🤔

I went through that for 3 years. I had just moved somewhere that was more isolated from town, lived alone, was dealing with a severe autoimmune disease that causes pain and fatigue among other things, and had just started working again after 6 years of sick leave, and I worked from home and covid started. I was so exhausted from trying to work that I had no energy left over to try to socialize or go out ~~not to mention covid~~ and I ended up extremely depressed and living in unhealthy conditions. Now that I'm finally starting to do better, It's made me much more aware and sympathetic of how easily this can happen to people. I was always the outgoing social butterfly... Anyway, I just wanted to comment and to send a big hug to anyone going through tough times of isolation.

I enjoy being alone. Been married 64 years and fortunate my wife understands I like my alone time. No talking, no radio or TV, just me and myself is immensely satisfying. My alone time assist in making decisions and again very appreciative my wife understands.

We started watching around 10 years ago, episode 21 to be exact. Your channel is a huge reason my family and I took the opportunity to pick up and move to Germany when the opportunity provided itself. It's been an amazing experience for all of us and we did it because of you guys.

So just to clarify watching SV Delos inspired you to move to Stuttgart which is a few hundred kilometers from the sea and any sailing opportunities. I suppose there might be a small lake or pond nearby where you could set sail.

The octopus was pulling your camera in towards its mantle, which is its mouth, on its underside. It was feeling you with its tentacles because the suction cups on its mantles are its sensory perception - it is how it identifies something, figures out what it is. SO smart! You've got to read "The Soul of an Octopus", and tell Sy that Darcee sent you!
