Butterfly
Demi Lovato Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴

Used to dread the month of June
'Cause it reminded me of you
It always came around too soon
Not anymore

The part of me I had to find
'Cause it was killing me inside
Yeah, you were always that goodbye
I wasn't ready for

Yeah, I figured this was
Something I'd deal with my whole life
Stuck pushing my past to the side
This is what it's supposed to feel like
Now I look up and I see you in the sky, oh

Butterfly, butterfly, butterfly
Butterfly, butterfly, butterfly
Butterfly, butterfly, butterfly

Forgiveness is the hardest truth
It's something that you have you to choose
Well, at least I got my heart from you
That much I'm grateful for I know because
You lying taught me about honesty, honesty
You leaving gave me my loyalty, loyalty
I'm growing into who I'm meant to be, oh
No more looking for a sign

This is
Something I'd deal with my whole life
Stuck pushing my past to the side
This is what it's supposed to feel like
Now I look up and I see you in the sky, oh

Butterfly, butterfly, butterfly
Butterfly, butterfly, butterfly
Butterfly, butterfly, butterfly

Oh
It was painful
It was needed
See you changing right in front of me

You were never
Really graceful
Now you're just what you're supposed to be

I can feel you
Like I need to I can see you flying over me
Flying over me

Oh, butterfly, butterfly, butterfly
Butterfly, butterfly

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Demi Lovato's song "Butterfly" explore themes of growth, transformation, and finding strength from past experiences. The verse "Used to dread the month of June, 'Cause it reminded me of you, It always came around too soon, Not anymore" suggests that the month of June used to hold painful memories associated with the person being addressed in the song. However, the singer reveals that they have overcome this pain and are no longer affected by it.

The chorus repeats the word "butterfly" multiple times, symbolizing the transformation and freedom that the singer has achieved. The line "This is what it's supposed to feel like, Now I look up and I see you in the sky" suggests a sense of liberation and empowerment. The singer has moved on from the past, embracing their growth and seeing the person who caused them pain in a new light.

The second verse continues the theme of forgiveness and choosing to let go of resentment. The lyrics "Forgiveness is the hardest truth, It's something that you have to choose" acknowledge the difficulty in forgiving, but also emphasize its importance for personal growth. The verse also expresses gratitude for the lessons learned from the painful experience, such as honesty and loyalty.

The bridge of the song reflects on the transformation witnessed in the person who caused the pain. The lyrics "See you changing right in front of me, You were never really graceful, Now you're just what you're supposed to be" suggest that the singer has observed the growth and development of the other person, realizing that they have become who they were meant to be.

In summary, "Butterfly" is a song about overcoming pain, finding strength in forgiveness, and embracing personal growth and transformation.

This song is for her Dad that died. She said that in Father’s Day (last year) a butterfly visited her and she posted an IG story something like “my father visited me today in butterfly’s form”

@franciscotiago6236

I didn't know that. Omg. Now all make more sense. Thanks

@marlene2805

Not to mention he died around Father’s Day too. They didn’t know exactly what day he died tho. “My biggest fear was that he would die alone, & he did” She felt so guilty that she was such a big advocate for mental health while cutting off her dad:(

@joemarkdelacruz7967

I don't know why I'm crying 😭
