I Can't Wait
Deniece Williams Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Late in the morning
The boss is throwin' his hands all in the air
I'm given a warnin'
He says I'm losin' my good position there
But right now I don't care

Tell you what I did this mornin'
Tell you what I did last night
Looked into my baby's eyes
And kissed and hugged and held him tight

And I can't wait
To spend another lazy night
In my baby's arms
I tell you that I can't help it
I just can't help it

I can't wait
To spend another lazy night
In my baby's arms
I tell you that I can't help it
I just can't help it

{I can't wait}
Ooh, to be in my baby's arms
{I can't wait}
Gotta be right here where I belong

It's late in the evening
You know they're jamming' at parties all around, and oh...
Rockin' and a-reelin'
And all of my friends are goin' out to paint the town
But I won't be around

Baby's gonna be right over
Told me that he won't be long
Got to light a candle up
And be right here where I belong

'Cause I can't wait
To spend another lazy night
In my baby's arms, uh-huh
I tell you that I can't help it
I just can't help it

I tell you that I can't wait
To spend another lazy night
In my baby's arms, ooh, ooh
I tell you that I can't help it
I just can't help it

{I can't wait}
Ooh, to be in my baby's arms
{I can't wait}
To be right here where I belong

Baby's gonna be right over
Told me that he won't be long
Got to light a candle up
And be right here where I belong

'Cause I can't wait
To spend another lazy night
In my baby's arms, yeah, yeah
I tell you that I can't help it
I just can't help it

I tell you that I can't wait
To spend another lazy night
In my baby's arms, yeah
I tell you that I can't help it
I just can't help it

I can't seem to help myself, oh, no
Never, never, never, never, never
No, no, baby

{Never can wait} Uh-huh
{Never ever can wait} No, I can't wait here
For those crazy nights, ah...

I can't wait (Baby)
To spend another lazy night (Oh, no)
In my baby's arms, oh, yeah
I tell you that I can't help it
I just can't help it

I tell you that I can't wait (Yeah)
To spend another lazy night
Gonna be in my baby's arms, uh-huh
I tell you that I can't help it
I just can't help it

I tell you that I can't seem to wait
To spend another lazy night (Oh, no)
In my baby's arms, uh-huh
I tell you that I can't help it
I just can't help it

I tell that you I can't wait, no, no, no

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Deniece Williams's song, "I Can't Wait," depicts a woman who is determined to spend time with her significant other rather than focusing on her boss's warnings and her friend's invitations to hangout. The first verse starts with the singer receiving a warning from her boss, but she is unfazed by it because all she cares about is being with her loved one. She proceeds to describe how she spent her night and morning, looking into her partner's eyes and embracing him. The chorus states her impatience to spend another lazy night in her partner's arms, indicating her desire to prioritize her romantic relationship over her work obligations and social life.

The second verse describes a similar scenario where her friends are going out to party, but she chooses to wait for her partner. She even lights a candle to create a romantic atmosphere for when they finally reunite. The chorus repeats, emphasizing her eagerness to be in her partner's arms again. The bridge repeats "I can't wait" and "never can wait" while adding "for those crazy nights," suggesting that she looks forward to wild and passionate nights with her partner.

The song's lyrics highlight the singer's devotion to her partner and desire for intimacy and alone time with them. The lyrics suggest a prioritization of love over other parts of life, which could be viewed as impractical but is relatable to anyone who has experienced a strong romantic connection. Deniece Williams's soulful voice delivers the lyrics with passion and intensity, emphasizing the emotions the singer is experiencing.

Yes, her voice and spirit are truly a gift to the world. I had the privilege of meeting her in Atlanta just a few weeks ago at the St. James Live. It was a sold out show and she sounded wonderful!

Love It! I agree this song had all the makings of a HUGE hit record. Somebody dropped the ball.

@charlesdotson4766

It actually ended up going to #8 on the RB charts, but didn't make the pop top top 10.

@bernardduncan7221

I don't know what it is about her music, but I love it period! But, every since she came out with FREE, I knew I was going to marry her. However, her music has always set the tone of the holiday season. Her music/voice has a way of wanting to hear more of her in this season. I love you Deniece Williams.

@jondishmonmusicandstuff2753

One of my favorites of hers. Even though her voice is not what it used to be I will always love Miss Willams for her talents and for her sharing them with us.

@charlesdotson4766

Jon Dishmon Music and STUFF!! Yes, but she still sounds great at age 68. Check out some of her recent concert footage. There's quite a bit on You Tube. In particular, her performance earlier this year at the St James Place in Atlanta is spectacular.

@sstavsky

Should've been a much bigger hit! Reached #66 on "Billboard" in October of 1988. The last chart hit for "Niecy."

@charlesdotson4766

sstavsky It did very well on the RB charts (it went to #8).

@donmccullen1973

@Charles Dotson CHR station KKMG in Colorado Springs played it. It went top 20 at least.
