That's What Friends Are For
Deniece Williams Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

While you're gone
Do you wonder how I spend my day
Thinkin' 'bout you
And maybe in a special way
I can show you how I miss you more and more
'Cause after all
That's what friends are for
Are you tired?
Do you think that you would like to nap?
By the fire
I will hold you gently in my lap
And I'll count the minutes till you sleep no more
'Cause after all
That's what friends are for

All I want to do
Is to make life a little better for you
So I try so hard to keep what's ours together
There never could be
Another for me

Are you hungry?
Do you think that you could use some wine
And the music
Did you have a certain thing in mind?
When the dinner, wine and music starts to bore
I will fluff the pillows on the floor and more
'Cause after all
That's what friends are for
'Cause after all
That's what friends are for
'Cause after all
That's what friends are for
'Cause after all
That's what friends are for
'Cause after all
That's what friends are for

'Cause after all
That's what friends are for

When we had brilliant music writers, musicians and arrangers. This gives me goose bumps.

Absolutely!!

A lot of singers sing by yelling, whistling or screaming to get at a high note. Deniece Williams' voice is exceptional in that she can sing at a very high pitch. No whistling or tricks with her singing. Her voice is pure and her talent is undeniable.

A mastermind of Stevie Wonder. Winbush,Williams,Wright, Riperton were singers of Wonderlove . Who sang for Stevie sounded amazing even though he can’t see but hearing the melodic voices of these women made you imagine things to life through song.

This is one of the most beautiful songs ever created!! Excellent vocals, arrangement, and musicianship!!

Whenever I hear this beautiful song I remember a particular night in June 1979. I had met a super chap at an organ recital and for reasons too complicated to explain here, we ended up spending the night wandering around in the Wimbledon area. We had a rest and sat on a seat outside the department store Eley's' just as dawn was appearing, and this song was running round and round my head. It just seemed to suit the rather surreal but peaceful situation! Richard was such a funny chap and we became firm friends until he died suddenly at the age of 27. R.I.P Richard.
