I got my start in musical theatre when I was seven years old. I sang "Where Is Love?" from the musical OLIVER for an audience of about 500 people, and have been hooked on performing ever since. I picked up the saxophone in school band back in 5th grade, guitar in 8th grade, recorded my first album independently at age 14, my second at age 16, and got serious about the piano during my first year of college.
I went to the University of Michigan to study Performing Arts Technology with a minor in Jazz Voice. However, after my first year there, I figured out that my dreams and goals as a pop singer/songwriter exceeded what Ann Arbor, Michigan had to offer me. I made the difficult decision to transfer, and started over in Los Angeles, where I graduated in December 2010 from the University of Southern California with a Bachelor of Science degree in Music Industry.
During my time at USC, I had a number of opportunities most kids only dream of. I met some truly inspiring people that quickly became heroes of mine. I learned the art of collaboration. I received a songwriting scholarship from Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys. I began working with writer/musician/producer extraordinaire Tim Kobza, who continues to help me sharpen my skills as a producer and recording engineer. I formed a band with which I created the best record in history. Oh, and I met a lot of girls worth breaking hearts and writing songs over.
But back to music...
I realized somewhere along the line that what I loved most about being on stage was the ability and the power to connect with people on many different emotional levels. Music is one of the deepest expressions of emotion, and writing and performing original music is as personal and naked as you can get. It makes it that much more meaningful, and to have people appreciate and relate to the feelings I'm putting out there makes me feel truly privileged to be a songwriter.
The only thing missing from my brief life story is a BIG thank you to my family. I feel so lucky to have them as my biggest fans... My parents are nothing but supportive and motivating, my younger brother Dalten is a talented actor and the best video game opponent ever, and my sister Riana is a stunning actress, singer, performer, writer, artist, graphic designer, playwright, and inspiration in her own right. She does all the photography for my promo material (including this website), as well as the graphic design for all of my albums. Please check her out at riananelson.com.

A Night Like This
Derik Nelson Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
fills the night
the storm outside is down another powerline
break out the blankets
let's try to stay warm
aren't you glad on a night like this
you don't have to be alone
mistletoe
cheap red wine and no where that we need to go
loving the silence
whispered conversations
aren't you glad on a night like this
you dont have to be alone
maybe the thrill of the season
helped us to find each other here
I certaintly don't need more of a reason
to want someone to love at this time of year
the window pane
flicks flickering flames
I live inside the breath you take
before you speak my name
make the most of this moment
before the lights come back on
aren't you glad on a night like this
you don't have to be alone
maybe the thrill of the season
helped us to find each other here
I certaintly don't need more of a reason
to want someone to love at this time of year
the window pane
flicks flickering flames
I live inside the breath you take
before you speak my name
make the most of this moment
before the lights come back on
aren't you glad on a night like this
you don't have to be alone
you don't have to be alone
aren't you glad on a night like this
you don't have to be alone
In "A Night Like This" by Derik Nelson, candlelight fills the night while a storm rages outside, knocking down power lines. The singer and their partner are huddled under blankets, grateful for each other's company on a night like this. Mistletoe hangs overhead and snow falls outside, but the two are content to enjoy the silence and whispered conversations over cheap red wine. The moment is fleeting, and the singer implores their partner to make the most of it before the lights come back on. The thrill of the season has brought them together, but the singer doesn't need any more reason to want someone to love at this time of year. The song ends with a repeated message of gratitude for not being alone on a night like this.
This song paints a beautiful picture of a cozy winter evening spent with someone special. The storm outside creates a sense of warmth and comfort inside, accentuated by the glow of candlelight, flickering flames, and a gentle snowfall. The lyrics speak to the importance of love and companionship during the holiday season, whether it is newfound or enduring. "A Night Like This" is a lovely reminder to cherish those special moments with the people we care about, especially during this time of year.
