Buy All My Dreams
Descartes A Kant Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Look at this diamond; it's not just a ring:
It means I'll be married and have many kids.
He gives me protection, stability I guess...
We will live in a castle with fancy horses and SHIT

He'll buy all my dreams and I'll be what he needs me to be...
Like all the girls I see in all the magazines,
without a single atom of identity around me,
and he won't care. 'Cause he can afford me;
and I don't care
if this classist crap that I'm around
surrounds, surrounds, surrounds, surrounds,
surrounds, surrounds, surrounds, surrounds, me
surrounds, surrounds, surrounds, surrounds!

You'll be in love with all the time those idiots stare at me like that,
and you'll show me off like the hottest accessory around you,
and you won't care. 'Cause you can afford me;
and I don't care
if this classist crap that I'm around
surrounds, surrounds, surrounds, surrounds,
surrounds, surrounds, surrounds, surrounds, me
surrounds, surrounds, surrounds, surrounds!

'Cause I'm so lovely and you won't care if I am boring
'Cause no one cares
if this classist crap that I'm around
surrounds, surrounds, surrounds, surrounds,
surrounds, surrounds, surrounds, surrounds, me
surrounds, surrounds, surrounds, surrounds!

I really don't mind if I justify my empty ideals all my life.
No complications or several points of view.
Love is based on what my eyes can find.

He gives me protection, stability I guess...
He'll buy all my dreams and I'll be who he needs me to be.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of “Buy All My Dreams” by Descartes A Kant are a scathing indictment of the consumerist mindset that has been perpetuated by society. The song follows the singer, who is a woman, as she reflects on her desire to be with a man who can afford to buy her everything she wants. She describes how she is willing to sacrifice her identity and become whoever he needs her to be, as long as he can provide her with the protection and stability she desires. The idea of marrying for financial security is something that has plagued society for centuries, and the lyrics highlight the warped priorities of modern culture.

The diamond ring, which is often seen as a symbol of love and commitment, is reduced to nothing more than a material object that represents marriage and children. The singer is willing to trade her freedom and individuality for the promise of a luxurious life, complete with a castle and fancy horses. She acknowledges the shallowness of her desires, but she is content to live her life without any complications or differing points of view. The repetitious use of the phrase “surrounds, surrounds, surrounds” emphasizes the suffocating nature of the classist world she inhabits.

The lyrics of “Buy All My Dreams” are a commentary on the commodification of love and the consequences of societal pressure to conform to certain expectations. The song is a reminder that our possessions do not define us and that love should not be based on material wealth. The singer’s willingness to sacrifice her identity and live a life of empty ideals is a cautionary tale about the destructive nature of consumerism.
