Their sound can be described as a blend between black, thrash and death metal, although in recent releases, the band's death metal edge has become more prominent. For example, the album 'Unchain the Wolves', considered to be their finest by many fans, has a less head-on and aggressive sound than later albums such as 'Cold Steel... for an Iron Age', which uses a more bombastic and hard-hitting tone. Their latest album, 'Defiance', was released on June 22nd 2009 through Season of Mist records.
Warslut formed the band following his departure from the cult black metal band Bestial Warlust. The project was a solo venture at first but eventually evolved into a proper band. The group's debut EP, "Violence is the Prince of this World," featured Warslut on guitar, bass and vocals, with Matt Skitz from Damaged and Criss Volcano from Abominator on drums. The song "The Eternal Glory of War" was later re-recorded for the album 'Phoenix Rising').
Following this release, Deströyer 666 got a full line-up that included bassist Bullet Eater (aka Phil Gresik, ex-Bestial Warlust, Hobbs' Angel of Death and Mass Confusion), Gospel of the Horns drummer Howitzer and guitarist Shrapnel. With these members the band recorded its first album, 'Unchain the Wolves'. Following this Howitzer was replaced by Deceiver and during 1999 Deströyer 666 recorded 'Phoenix Rising', though it was not released for more than a year.
During 2000, the band toured Europe extensively. Dutch drummer Erich de Windt of Sinister and Prostitute Disfigurement joined the band after the recording of the EP "King of Kings". Gresik left to be replaced by Simon Berserker. 'Phoenix Rising' was released by Season of Mist in November. De Windt was replaced by German drummer Mersus in 2001 and Deströyer 666 toured through Europe again with Immolation and Deranged, after which the band left Australia for good. Warslut settled in Eindhoven in the Netherlands and Shrapnel began living in London.
The 2002 album 'Cold Steel... For an Iron Age' featured cover art, which the band has since disavowed, claiming they never approved it. A reissue of the album was scheduled for late 2005 but as of May 2009, this has still not come to light. It is supposed to feature all new artwork as well as bonus songs. The group is also working on a new LP containing all of the songs previously released only on 7" vinyl EPs.

Tear me with talons and slap me with feathers
Once I could depend on death my friend
So, you've come again
Time becomes reckoned on wings
That are beating
And the day begins screaming
Oh I am still here (a thousand years)
I am still here (a thousand deaths)
I am still here, so hear me cry
Feed on me feed on me feed on me
But promise me I'll die but
Promise me I'll die
Promise me I'll die for the last time
Oceans endless time
Eats at the earth, and the rock
And my memory
I recall the crime the clay the fire
Man I made divine
Curses mortality, yearning eternal
But, immortalised, I'm screaming
Oh I am still here (a thousand years)
I am still here (a thousand deaths)
I am still here, so hear me cry
Feed on me feed on me feed on me
But promise me I'll die promise me I'll die
Promise me I'll die for the last time
So, you've come again
Flight of the eagle that rises totemic
Do I fear the pain? Or the weakness?
So, you've come again
Now that my nightmare has patched me together
I can die again screaming
OH I AM STILL HERE (a thousand years)
I am still here (a thousand deaths)
I am still here, so hear me cry
Feed on me feed on me feed on me
But promise me I'll die promise me I'll die
Promise me I'll die for the last time
The lyrics to Deströyer 666's song "Prometheus" delve into themes of mortality, suffering, and the eternal struggle of existence. The song begins with a sense of resignation to the cycle of pain and death, as the singer acknowledges the relentless nature of their suffering. They reflect on a time when death was a reliable companion, hinting at a deeper longing for release from their torment.
As the song progresses, the imagery of wings beating and the day beginning to scream creates a chaotic and intense atmosphere. The repetition of "I am still here" emphasizes the enduring endurance of the singer despite facing countless deaths and trials. There is a desperate plea for release, to be fed upon and ultimately find peace in death.
The reference to oceans and the earth being eroded by endless time alludes to the vastness of existence and the insignificance of individual pain in the grand scheme of things. The character of Prometheus, a figure from Greek mythology who defied the gods to bring fire to humanity, is invoked here. The singer seems to grapple with the consequences of their actions, cursed with immortal life and yearning for an end to their suffering.
The mention of the eagle, a symbol of power and freedom, and the singer's contemplation of fear and weakness suggest a complex inner turmoil. The final plea for the promise of death "for the last time" encapsulates a desire for finality and release from the eternal torment. The song ends with a powerful declaration of the singer's enduring presence amidst a thousand years and deaths, their cries echoing into the void as they yearn for an end to their immortal existence.
