Dancing Shoes
Dev Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I'm putting on my dancing shoes tonight
Ten thousand people waiting for me
I can hear them outside from the curtain I sit behind
The drums kick in and the lights go down
My heartbeat drowns out the sound
My hands go up, I sing my song
And a thousand voices sing along
I used to lay awake
Hear a crowd roar to every word I say
Now the stars, they used to shine so bright
They were all replaced by candle lights
And it all, makes it harder to find the places that we know

I'm putting on my dancing shoes tonight
Ten thousand people waiting for me
I can hear them outside from the curtain I sit behind
The drums kick in and the lights go down
My heartbeat drowns out the sound
My hands go up, I sing my song
And a thousand voices sing along

Can you hear? Close your eyes
Hearts are racing side-by-side
For you I sing, I sing for you
For you, I wear these dancing shoes
I wear these dancing shoes

Are you out there?
Can you hear me?
Are you out there?
Can you hear me?
Are you out there?
Can you hear me?
Are you out there?
Can you hear me?

I'm putting on my dancing shoes tonight
Ten thousand people waiting for me
I can hear them outside

Can you hear? Close your eyes
Hearts are racing side-by-side
For you I sing, I sing for you
For you, I wear these dancing shoes

I wear these dancing shoes
I wear these dancing shoes

Overall Meaning

The song "Dancing Shoes" by Dev is a story of an artist getting ready for a performance. He talks about the anticipation and excitement before the show and the adrenaline rush he feels while performing. The lyrics suggest that the artist has been in the industry for some time and has evolved as an artist. He references the changes in his career, from a small crowd to now performing in front of ten thousand people. Despite the changes, the artist is still driven by his love for music and his passion for performing.

The lines "I used to lay awake, hear a crowd roar to every word I say" indicate that the artist has come a long way from his initial struggles. The reference to the stars being replaced by candle lights could be a metaphor for the artist's fame and how it may have dimmed over time. Despite this, the energy and connection with the audience are still strong. The chorus repeats, "For you I sing, I sing for you - For you, I wear these dancing shoes," emphasizing the artist's relationship with his audience, music, and passion for performing.

Overall, "Dancing Shoes" is a song about the thrill of performing and the emotional connection between an artist and their audience. The lyrics suggest that fame and fortune may not be the most important things to an artist, but rather the passion for music and the ability to connect with others through song.

A short story:

My father was born in 1903 ... he would have been 110 this year. Dad was a good man, he had his foibles and flaws as we all have - but he was a wonderful father. When I was six or seven [quite young] I remember sitting behind the steering wheel of he family car. I was born in '42... so this car was an oldie... painted gun metal gray. Perhaps it was a Plymouth, my parents were fond of them ... we had several before I left home. [Anyway, I digress]... I was sitting behind the steering wheel of this monster of a car. I doubt if I could have seen over the steering wheel.

My father came out and peered in the window and asked me what I was doing. "I'm driving to Africa." ... He smiled and went back in the house. Why I was driving to Africa I don't know. I'm surprised I knew anything about Africa at that age. ... But dad only smiled and went back in the house and I drove to Africa. That was my dad.

Mother decided I needed to take ballet lessons. Oh, lord... why? I was as awkward as a bull in china shop. Oh... dear lord, why? Did I happen to mention I wanted to be a ballerina? ... I don't recall. I do remember telling them often enough I wanted a horse. Oh... how I wanted a horse so badly...Sighs.

Anyway, mother tells me I'm taking ballet ... oh horrors! And Dad, bless his heart is ever so helpful and dutifully makes a practice bar for me. Oh. I won't paint a picture of this horror. However soon fortune smiled on me as I think the ballet instructor took pity on me and whispered in my mother’s ear and told her it was no hope. Blessed be the name of that instructor. When I left home to get married the ballet bar was still there... When my father built something, he intended it to stay - forever.

I regret ... all the prayers for the horse went for naught; such a pity. But Dad, I love you. Muhhhwah!

What a great piece to cap off DEV's most commercially successfully era (2010-12). This song and the video represented her career as an intimate performer. She's perfectly happy doing her own thing, no need for stadiums or crazy Twitter stans.
