Fire
Deva Mahal Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴

Long
It's been a long time coming
Though it's in the strong
A real strong warning
That you try to fight
But this a losing battle
Faded lights
So put your feet to the gravel
I've tried, Lord knows I've tried
Oh, I can't go any further
If you only know
The darkness inside
I can't go any further
And if you only know
The darkness inside of me
True, you truly make me feel good
And I know you'd
Do anything that you could
To make me happy
Happier than I deserve
But I was set on fire
And you can't heal these burns
The tears I've cried
Could fill a river wide
Oh, said, "I can't go any further"
If you only know
The darkness inside
I can't go any further
And if you only know
The darkness inside of me
Yeah, said, "No"
Said, "No"
Said, "No and no"
Said, "I can't go, no, any further"
And if you only know, oh
The darkness inside
And I can't go, no, any further
And if you only know
The darkness inside of me

Said, "No and no"
Said, "No and no"

Overall Meaning

The lyrics speak about a long and difficult journey that the singer has been on for a while. They mention that even though they have been strong and have tried to fight, there is a sense of inevitability in their struggles - almost as if they are in a losing battle. The image of "faded lights" and putting their feet to the gravel conveys a feeling of exhaustion and facing obstacles that seem insurmountable. Despite their efforts, they feel they cannot go any further due to the darkness they carry inside them.

The singer expresses gratitude towards someone who makes them feel good and does everything they can to make them happy. However, even with this support, the singer recognizes that they have been deeply wounded - metaphorically described as being "set on fire" and having burns that cannot be healed. The intense emotions and pain they have experienced are highlighted through the imagery of crying tears that could "fill a river wide."

The repetition of "I can't go any further" emphasizes the singer's feeling of being stuck and unable to progress, especially because of the darkness that resides within them. Despite the efforts of the supportive person, the singer feels constrained by their own internal struggles and emotional burdens. The repeated phrases "Said, 'No and no'" indicate a firm decision to not continue on this path, suggesting a need to address and confront the darkness inside.

Ultimately, the lyrics convey a sense of inner turmoil and a realization that despite external efforts to bring happiness and support, there is a deep-seated darkness that cannot be easily overcome. The singer's repeated acknowledgment of this darkness and their declaration that they cannot go any further reflect a moment of introspection and perhaps a turning point in their journey towards healing and self-discovery.
