Time Has Come Today
Deville Willy Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Our time has come today
And young hearts will go their way
Can't put it off another day
We don't care what others say
They say we don't listen anyway
'Cause our time has come today

The rules have changed today
Out of luck and no place to stay
Thinking about how suddenly
My love has flown away
Now my chance has come and gone
On my own I have to roam
See I have no home
I just have no home

And now the time has come
And there's no place to run
I won't be burned up by the sun
Then again I've had my fun
I've shoved and pushed aside
I was crushed by a tumbling tide
Strapped down
Psychoanalized

But now the time has come
There are things to be realized

'Cause time has come today
Our time has come today

Overall Meaning

Deville Willy's song "Time Has Come Today" is a soulful plea against repression and inequality seeking to uplift the downtrodden and promote social justice. The song points out that the era of reckoning has come, so people should be free to pursue their passions without fear of discrimination or ridicule. The lyrics imply that young people have to embrace their inner selves and take risks; the time to act is now. No longer should they delay or hesitate because what they do now will determine the course of their lives.

The opening lines, "Our time has come today, and young hearts will go their way" suggests a kind of rebellious optimism as the youth will now assert themselves, irrespective of what others say. The song's central theme involves a desire for freedom and self-fulfillment that is motivated by the fear of missing opportunities. The singer bemoans the loss of love and speaks of how he must move on and explore life without being held back. He acknowledges that his chances may have passed by, and he was left at a crossroads.

The song's chorus, "Time has come today, our time has come today" encapsulates the entire message of the song calling on the youth to take action, move on from the past, and forge a better future. Ultimately, the song represents a call to action that challenges the youth to reject the status quo and to grasp hold of their future and happiness.

I remember hearing this song for the first time in 67. I was 12 and the song was incredibly powerful to me lyrically and musically it blew me away. I remember thinking they are singing about me
It was an anth for me. I didn't think anyone could ever do the song justice covering it. I was wrong, what a great interpretation by Willy, love the slide guitar work

I saw Willie in a small venue, an old theatre, converted into a rock and roll club. At the time he was billed as mink de ville. At the time, around summer of 74, 75 or 76, I can't be sure, but he just blew the place away. It was so different than, the southern rock, country rock, glam rock, disco crap coming in vouge, just awesome show and music
I lost track after he left NYC, and I am so happy to reconnect
It is a shame, he was recognized as a genius in Europe, but not here
Sweet bleeding Jesus I think bands like journey and foreigner are in the hall of Fame and Willie is not, WTF
