After performing in a number of metal bands in high school, Townsend was discovered by a record label in 1993 and was asked to perform lead vocals on Steve Vai's album Sex & Religion. After recording and touring with Vai, Townsend was discouraged by what he found in the music industry, and vented his anger on a solo album released under the pseudonym Strapping Young Lad. He soon assembled a band under the name, and released the critically acclaimed City in 1997. Since then, he has released three more studio albums with Strapping Young Lad, along with solo material released under his own independent record label, HevyDevy Records. Townsend's solo albums, a diverse mix of hard rock and progressive metal, have featured a varying lineup of supporting musicians. In 2002 he formed The Devin Townsend Band, a dedicated lineup which recorded and toured for two of his solo releases.
In 2007, Townsend disbanded both Strapping Young Lad and The Devin Townsend Band, taking a break from touring to spend more time with his family. After a two-year hiatus, he began work on a four-album series called The Devin Townsend Project, with each album written in a different style. The first two entries in the series, Ki and Addicted, were released in 2009. Townsend scheduled tours throughout Australia and North America in 2010 in support of the albums, and released the next two, Deconstruction and Ghost, in 2011.
Townsend's trademark production style, featuring a heavily multitracked wall of sound, has been compared to the styles of Phil Spector and Frank Zappa. His versatile vocal delivery ranges from screaming to an opera-esque singing, and his songwriting is similarly diverse. Townsend's musical style is rooted in metal, and his albums are written to express different aspects of his personality.

The world is gonna turn without you baby
(lead us)
Don't worry about a thing it's all a game
(lead us)
Just as you're falling apart, I fall for you
Though we try to pretend that it's
Not the end it keeps us calm now babe
Ooh, I wanna die i just wanna follow the sun
There's no shame ooh, I wanna die
I just wanna follow the sun
The world is gonna turn without you baby
Don't worry about a thing it's all a game
Just as it's falling apart
I've fallen for you
Just as I tear it apart, I've fallen for you
Though we try to pretend that
It's not the end it keeps us calm now babe
Ooh, I wanna die i just wanna follow the sun
There's no shame ooh, I wanna die
I just wanna follow the sun
Yеah! Ooh, I wanna die
I just wanna follow the sun ooh, I wanna die
I just wanna follow thе sun ooh, I wanna die
The lyrics of "Equinox" by Devin Townsend evoke a sense of surrender and acceptance of the inevitable passage of time. The opening lines, "Time, keep rolling soften your eyes," suggest a plea to time to gently pass by, possibly indicating a desire to make peace with the changes that time brings. The refrain "The world is gonna turn without you baby, Don't worry about a thing it's all a game" conveys a message of reassurance, implying that life will continue its course regardless of individual worries or struggles.
As the lyrics progress, there is a theme of letting go and finding solace in the midst of chaos. The lines "Just as you're falling apart, I fall for you" and "Just as it's falling apart, I've fallen for you" suggest a sense of connection and devotion amidst challenging circumstances. Despite the tumultuous nature of life, there is a sense of mutual support and resilience between the individuals portrayed in the song.
The repetition of the lines "Ooh, I wanna die, I just wanna follow the sun, There's no shame" conveys a longing for escape and release from the burdens of existence. The metaphor of following the sun may symbolize a desire for enlightenment, transcendence, or a sense of freedom from earthly struggles. The mention of shamelessness in this context could reflect a willingness to embrace vulnerability and authenticity in the face of mortality.
The final repetition of "Ooh, I wanna die, I just wanna follow the sun" underscores the yearning for a peaceful end or a spiritual journey towards light and warmth. The repetition of this sentiment throughout the song emphasizes a deep longing for transformation and a release from the confines of earthly limitations.
