Just Friends
Dexter Gordon Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Just friends, lovers no more
Just friends, but not like before
To think of what we've been and not to kiss again
Seems like pretending it isn't the ending
Two friends drifting apart
Two friends, but one broken heart
We loved, we laughed, we cried, and suddenly love died

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of the Dexter Gordon Quartet's song "Just Friends" speak about a relationship that has ended, but the two parties involved have chosen to remain friends. The song is all about the two former lovers acknowledging that they are no longer romantically involved with each other but trying to maintain a friendship. The first line "Just friends, lovers no more" sets the tone of the song and the theme that runs throughout.

The lyrics go on to express how the two have accepted their fate, but it's not easy to forget the past. The line "To think of what we've been and not to kiss again" portrays the pain of the two, but they seem to be holding it together- only pretending it isn't the ending. This is a natural ending to a relationship where love has been lost. The last verse talks about the two, though friendly, have drifted apart with one being left with a broken heart. The line "We loved, we laughed, we cried, and suddenly love died" sums up the experiences of the two, but the acknowledgment that they were happy before the love died is essential in understanding the context in which the song was written.

I listen to Frahm, Alexander, Higgins all the modern 50+ year old guys and they're exceptional players without a doubt, but I ask why at 78 years old, I still would want to play like Dexter than anyone you can name!

@freddym223

Dexter is great ! But at age 80 I'd like to name Wardell Gray . Nice that we all have different favorites .Let me throw another name at you .Larry Mckenna tenor sax !

@anthonyhargis9411

@freddym223, I really dig Larry. Just discovered that a Tenor man I heard in Al Hirt's Club in New Orleans in 1963 who blew me away, Sal Nestico. I never have known who he was. I just found out that at the time he was just 23 years old. If he isn't #1 he's a million miles ahead of whoever is #2. Hahaha, Sal Nestico, the most underrated of all time.

@freddym223

@Anthony Hargis Hey Tony,thanks for turning me on to Sal ! great player ! I noticed you mention Frahm . check this sweet solo out https://youtu.be/fQuc5EcyhZY he is great ! We seem to have the same taste . But Larry is still my all time favorite .
