The band started in 1999 when 15 year old Jamie Westland (drums) asked his father Dick to help him set up a band. Three other teenagers joined him which are Tim Akkerman (vocals), Frans 'Spike' van Zoest (guitar and background vocals) and Bas van Wageningen (bass). The singer, Tim Akkerman was just 19, the guitar player and the drummer were only 15 years old at that time.
Within a few months Di-rect had completed a five track demo which included the song "Just the Way I Do". 3FM radio DJ Rob Stenders saw them play live and was impressed by them. He played a song from their demo on national radio. This generated considerable interest by record companies. Two months later Di-rect signed with Dino Music/EMI. Never Again
Di-rect Lyrics

With miles and miles between
Tell me how you feel
Pictures on my mind
Remind me of a girl
I used to kiss goodnight
Never again, will I feel the same
Words just can't explain
Now we're on our own
With mountains in between
I'll tell you how I feel
All those years
Love and tears, in vain
Never again, will I feel the same
Never again, the silence remains
Put up with words
And promises
The rage against the will to carry on
If only we could understand
How to deal the cards
Revival would be in our hands
Many years we held it back
We never said a word
We struggle in our heads
And now it's gone I understand
Never again, will I fear to stay
Forever again, my love for you remains
If only we talked
And trusted
We could defy the rain and carry on
And never again, will I fear to stay
Forever again, my love for you remains
It's all about trust my love, the way we talk
The way we run
And we will overcome…
The lyrics of Di-rect's song "Never Again" revolve around a sense of longing and regret for a lost love. The song delves into the emotions and reflections of both individuals who were once connected, now separated by physical and emotional distances. The lyrics imply a sense of nostalgia as they recall the memories and moments they have shared.
The first verse reflects on the past, where the singer talks about being alone and missing the girl they used to kiss goodnight. The phrase "Never again, will I feel the same" suggests that the singer knows they can never recreate the same feelings they once had. The inability to fully express or explain these feelings is acknowledged, as expressed in the line "Words just can't explain."
In the second verse, the focus shifts to the present, where the separation between the two individuals has become even greater, symbolized by the mountains between them. The singer acknowledges that they will share their feelings, but also mentions the years of love and tears that were ultimately in vain. The phrase "Never again, the silence remains" indicates that the lack of communication or expression of emotions has resulted in an enduring silence.
The chorus emphasizes the yearning for a different outcome and the desire to go back in time. The lines "If only we could understand, how to deal the cards, Revival would be in our hands" imply that if they could have better communication and understanding, they could have revived their love. The lyrics hint at a struggle within themselves, as they note that they never spoke about their thoughts and feelings. The realization that it is now too late to change the past is expressed in the line "And now it's gone I understand."
Overall, "Never Again" by Di-rect conveys a sense of longing and regret for a lost love, highlighting the importance of communication, trust, and understanding in a relationship. It explores the consequences of not expressing emotions and failing to communicate openly, leading to a sense of loss and separation.
