The Supremes were a hugely successful Motown all-female singing group active from 1959 until 1977, performing at various times doo-wop, pop, soul, Broadway showtunes, psychedelia and disco. Second only to The Beatles in terms of records sales and chart success, The Supremes were the most successful American musical act of the 1960s, delivering twelve #1 hits between 1964 and 1969, many of them written and produced by Motown's main songwriting and production team, Holland-Dozier-Holland.
Founded in Detroit, Michigan in 1959, The Supremes began as a quartet called The Primettes. Founding members Florence Ballard, Mary Wilson, Diana Ross, and Betty McGlown, all from the Brewster-Douglas public housing project in Detroit, were the sister act to The Primes (later The Temptations). In 1960, Barbara Martin replaced McGlown, and the group signed with Motown in 1961 as The Supremes.
Martin left at the end of 1961, and Ross, Ballard, and Wilson carried on as a trio. After they achieved success in 1964 with Ross as the lead singer, Motown president Berry Gordy renamed the group Diana Ross and the Supremes in 1967. Ballard left the group that same year because of personal differences and was replaced by Cindy Birdsong.
Diana Ross left the group for a history-making solo career in 1970 and was replaced by Jean Terrell. After 1972, the lineup of The Supremes changed frequently, with Lynda Laurence, Scherrie Payne, and Susaye Greene all becoming members before the group ended its eighteen-year existence in 1977.
Why Do Fools Fall In Love
Diana Ross and the Supremes Lyrics

Gave up everything to keep love satisfied
Baby the air that I breathe you will take when you leave
All because of this something small
Like the day I missed your call
I tried to get in touch with you
When I finally did you said we''re through
Build up trust, then tear it down, oh tell me why
When it takes so long to make it
And no time at all to break it off
Then you walked away I just stood there numb
I had nothing to say
Into the night you walked away with my life
And feeling almost half my size
I looked up and the heaven''s eyes
Smile was gone we used to see
She knew that you were standing there with me
Why must we fall in love to find out how to cry?
Build up trust, then tear it down, oh tell me why
When it takes so long to make it
And no time at all to break it off
One day up then the next day down
Love will keep you going like a merry go round
To keep you hurting, hurting
You both tried night and day from the start
To keep your love from falling apart
Then all at once you left one out
And love walks out the door
You''re searching baby, for something else
You''ll never find that thing you have before
Why must we fall in love to find out how to cry?
Build up trust, then tear it down, oh tell me why
When it takes so long to make it
And no time at all
Why must we fall in love to find out how to cry?
Build up trust, then tear it down oh tell me why
Why must we fall in love to find out how to cry?
Build up trust, then tear it down oh tell me why
The lyrics of the song "Why Do Fools Fall in Love" by Diana Ross and the Supremes explores the complicated nature of love and relationships. The song talks about the highs and lows of being in love, and how it can be so difficult to maintain a relationship despite putting in all the efforts. The first verse talks about how two people share their lives and give up everything to keep love satisfied, but sometimes it all falls apart because of a small misunderstanding. The singer talks about how something as small as missing a call can lead to the end of the relationship.
In the chorus, the singer questions why people have to fall in love to find out how to cry. She talks about how love can build up trust and then tear it down, leaving people hurting and confused. She wonders why it takes so long to build a relationship, and how it can be broken off in no time at all.
The second verse talks about the aftermath of a breakup. The singer is left feeling numb as the person she loves walks away with her life. The imagery of being left almost half her size illustrates the feeling of heartbreak and loss people go through when a relationship ends. The final verse talks about the foolishness of searching for love when you have already had it before.

For so long we share each other's lives
We have been together for a very long time and have shared our lives with each other
Gave up everything to keep love satisfied
We have made sacrifices to keep our love strong and satisfied
Baby the air that I breathe you will take when you leave
You are so important to me that I will feel like I cannot breathe without you when you leave
All because of this something small
Our love was destroyed by something that seemed small and insignificant
Like the day I missed your call
Our love was destroyed by something as simple as me missing your call
I tried to get in touch with you
I made an effort to reach out to you
When I finally did you said we're through
When I finally spoke to you, you told me that our relationship was over
Why must we fall in love to find out how to cry?
Why do we have to love someone to the point where it hurts us to understand the pain of heartbreak?
Build up trust, then tear it down, oh tell me why
Why do we spend so much time building trust in a relationship, only to tear it down later?
When it takes so long to make it
It takes time and effort to build a strong relationship
And no time at all to break it off
However, it only takes a moment to break a relationship apart
Then you walked away I just stood there numb
When you left, I was in shock and couldn't move or react
I had nothing to say
I didn't know what to say or how to react to your departure
Into the night you walked away with my life
When you left, it felt like you took my whole life with you
And feeling almost half my size
I felt so small and insignificant after you left
I looked up and the heaven's eyes
I looked up to the skies, seeking comfort and guidance
Smile was gone we used to see
I felt like even the heavens were not smiling upon our relationship
She knew that you were standing there with me
The heavens knew that you and I were together
One day up then the next day down
Our relationship was like a roller coaster, with ups and downs
Love will keep you going like a merry go round
Love can keep a relationship going like a never-ending merry-go-round
To keep you hurting, hurting
However, it can also cause you immense pain and hurt
You both tried night and day from the start
We both worked tirelessly to make our relationship work from the beginning
To keep your love from falling apart
We did everything we could to prevent our love from falling apart
Then all at once you left one out
But in the end, we neglected one important aspect that caused our relationship to fall apart
And love walks out the door
And with that, our love walked out of the door
You're searching baby, for something else
Now, you are looking for something else to make you happy
You'll never find that thing you have before
But you will never find a love like ours again

Nothing like the JOY it brought to the hearts of the lawyers whose kids were put through Harvard by fees from the resulting litigation after this song made Frankie Lymon's estate rich.
