Dick Haymes (September 13, 1918 – March 28, 1980) was one of the most popular American male vocalists of the 1940s and early 1950s.
He was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina. His Irish-born mother, Marguerite Haymes (1894-1987), was a well-known vocal coach and instructor. He became the vocalist in a number of big bands, worked in Hollywood on radio and in many films throughout the forties and fifties.
He never became a United States citizen and avoided military service during World War II by asserting his non-belligerent status as a citizen of Argentina, which was neutral. Years later (1955), this act of his nearly caused his deportation to Argentina on an unrelated technicality in immigration law. During World War II, he was briefly detained at Ellis Island.
Haymes was married six times and had six children. His most famous marriages were to film actresses Joanne Dru (1941-1949) and Rita Hayworth (1953-1955). His daughter Stephanie Haymes was married to Sir Elton John's lyricist Bernie Taupin
He died in Los Angeles from lung cancer, at the age of 61.
Isn't This A Lovely Day
Dick Haymes Lyrics

The thunder and lightning
Seem to be having their way.
But as far as I'm concerned, it's a lovely day.
The turn in the weather
Will keep us together
So I can honestly say,
That as far as I'm concerned, it's a lovely day
Isn't this a lovely day to be caught in the rain.
You were going on your way, now you've got to remain.
Just as you were going, leaving me all at sea,
The clouds broke, they broke and oh what a break for me.
I can see the sun up high, though we're caught in a storm.
I can see where you and I could be cozy and warm.
Let the rain pitter patter
But it really doesn't matter
If the skies are gray.
Long as I can be with you, it's a lovely day.
In Dick Haymes's song "Isn't This A Lovely Day," the singer acknowledges that the current weather conditions are not pleasant, describing them as "frightening" and with thunder and lightning having their way. Despite this, the singer remains upbeat and positive, stating that as far as they are concerned, it is still a lovely day. They describe how the turn in the weather will keep them and their companion together, and that everything is okay despite the storm. The chorus emphasizes this sentiment, with the lyrics asking if this is a lovely day to be caught in the rain and expressing a desire to be cozy and warm with their companion despite the weather.
The song's message is one of optimism and finding joy in difficult situations. The singer doesn't let the storm dampen their mood or their plans, instead choosing to focus on being with their companion and making the best of the situation. The lyrics also highlight the power of being together in weathering difficult times.
