Dick Haymes (September 13, 1918 – March 28, 1980) was one of the most popular American male vocalists of the 1940s and early 1950s.
He was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina. His Irish-born mother, Marguerite Haymes (1894-1987), was a well-known vocal coach and instructor. He became the vocalist in a number of big bands, worked in Hollywood on radio and in many films throughout the forties and fifties.

Years later (1955), this act of his nearly caused his deportation to Argentina on an unrelated technicality in immigration law. During World War II, he was briefly detained at Ellis Island.
Haymes was married six times and had six children. His most famous marriages were to film actresses Joanne Dru (1941-1949) and Rita Hayworth (1953-1955). His daughter Stephanie Haymes was married to Sir Elton John's lyricist Bernie Taupin
He died in Los Angeles from lung cancer, at the age of 61.

Life has been beautiful, we have been young
After you've gone, life will go on
Like an old song we have sung
When I grow too old to dream
I'll have you to remember
When I grow too old to dream
So, kiss me my sweet
And so let us part
And when I grow too old to dream
That kiss will live in my heart
And when I grow too old to dream
That kiss will live in my heart
So, kiss me my sweet
And so let us part
And when I grow too old to dream
That kiss will live in my heart
The opening lines of the song "When I Grow Too Old to Dream" sets the tone for the rest of the lyrics. The verses describe a life that’s been filled with joy and wonder as the couple journeyed through their youth. Despite the fact that their journey may eventually come to an end, the singer assures their significant other that they will always keep the memories of their time together close to their heart. The lyrics "When I grow too old to dream, I'll have you to remember" express the comfort and solace that the singer finds in their loved one's memory.
The second verse of the song marks the end of the couple's journey together. The singer knows that even if their relationship ends, they will always have the memories of their love to look back on. The final words of the song, "That kiss will live in my heart," express the enduring strength of their love. The singer knows that even as they grow older, time will never be able to erase the love they once had.
Overall, the song is a beautifully crafted tribute to the power of love and memory. It finds beauty in the inevitability of aging, and offers a message of hope and comfort to those who may be afraid of growing old.
