In Diego El Cigala's song "Camino de Galilea," the singer tells the story of encountering a shepherd boy while on the way to Bethlehem. The boy informs the singer that a donkey is resting on the path, and reveals that he is also on his way to see the baby Jesus, who has been born as a symbol of hope. The singer then speaks of the rumors surrounding the baby's birth, that he is the Messiah who will bring peace to the world. As they continue on their way, the singer picks up fragrant herbs to bring as gifts to the baby, and invites other shepherds to come join in the celebration.
This song is a traditional villancico, or a Christmas carol, in the flamenco-style of Southern Spain. The lyrics reflect the mix of Catholic and Moorish cultures of the region, and celebrate the birth of Jesus as a unifying force. The repeated phrase "Dicen que ya vendrá" (they say he will come) echoes the anticipation and excitement of the season, and the hope for salvation in the birth of Jesus.
